Whether the Harry Potter Tour in London is worth it mainly depends on how big a fan you are of the Harry Potter films. Personally, I’ve watched the movies countless times because my children were huge fans when they were younger. Over the past fifteen years, I’ve visited the Warner Bros. Studio several times, and I can honestly say that it’s absolutely worth it for fans.<\/p>\n

During the tour, you’ll walk through the original sets used in the films. You’ll visit iconic locations such as the Great Hall at Hogwarts, the Forbidden Forest, Platform 9\u00be with the Hogwarts Express, and the entire Diagon Alley. There are also several interactive experiences. You can pose with a luggage trolley disappearing through the wall, fly on a broomstick using a green screen, and, of course, try a glass of the famous non-alcoholic Butterbeer.<\/p>\n

Keep in mind that there are a few downsides as well. Ticket prices are relatively expensive, and both the caf\u00e9s and souvenir shops can be quite pricey. It can also get very crowded, especially during school holidays and weekends. In addition, all information boards and exhibitions are entirely in English.<\/p>\n

Normally, film sets, costumes, and wigs are dismantled or reused for other productions once filming has wrapped. However, things were different during the production of the Harry Potter films. Because J.K. Rowling was still writing the final books, Warner Bros. didn’t know which sets and props might be needed again in future films. The Harry Potter Studio Tour is divided into two sections. Halfway through the route, you’ll find a restaurant, a caf\u00e9, and restrooms. This is the perfect opportunity to take a short break before continuing the tour.<\/p>\n

The experience begins even before you enter the studios. After your ticket has been checked, you’ll be guided to the theatre along with the other visitors. On busy days, you may have to wait here for a while. You enter the cinema through the famous cupboard under the stairs, where Harry slept as a child.<\/p>\n

First, you’ll watch a short introductory film in which several actors from the Harry Potter films and J.K. Rowling welcome you. Once the film ends, the curtain rises to reveal the impressive doors of the Great Hall. The Great Hall was the very first film set built for the Harry Potter movies and is also one of the largest sets in the entire series. Better known as The Great Hall<\/strong>, it was inspired by the dining hall of Christ Church College in Oxford.<\/p>\n

During the Harry Potter Studio Tour, the Great Hall looks almost exactly as it does in the films. The only thing missing is the impressive ceiling with its floating candles, as this effect was added digitally during filming. Apart from that, you’ll see the richly decorated walls, the long dining tables, and several costumes worn by the actors.<\/p>\n

You can also see the teachers’ table, Dumbledore’s lectern, and the large hourglasses used to keep track of the House points at Hogwarts. At the end of the hall, you’ll find several wigs and hats worn by well-known professors, including Dumbledore’s.<\/p>\n

One thing that immediately stood out to me during my first visit was that, after the introduction, you’re free to explore the studios at your own pace. Before visiting, I assumed the entire tour would be guided or that you’d stay with a group. However, once you leave the Great Hall, you can take as much time as you like to admire the film sets, costumes, props, and other original items, as well as stop whenever you want to take photos.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

After leaving the Great Hall, you’ll enter the Forbidden Forest<\/strong>, one of the most impressive parts of the Harry Potter Studio Tour. For the Studio Tour, this iconic set was carefully recreated, allowing visitors to walk through the mysterious forest themselves.<\/p>\n

As you follow the winding path, you’ll make your way to the nest of the giant spider Aragog. With the help of mist, lighting effects, and eerie sound effects, it truly feels as though you’re walking through the Forbidden Forest. Fortunately, there is also an alternative route for young children and visitors with a fear of spiders.<\/p>\n

During my visits, I noticed that this is one of the highlights of the tour for children, including my own. The combination of the impressive sets, special effects, and the encounter with Aragog creates a memorable experience that leaves a lasting impression on young Harry Potter fans.<\/p>\n

After the Forbidden Forest, you’ll arrive at the impressive Ministry of Magic<\/strong>. This is one of the largest sets on the Harry Potter Studio Tour and was used for scenes featuring hundreds of actors and extras. A fun fact is that many of these extras were actually members of the film crew. For filming, they were dressed in robes, beards, and hats, creating the illusion that the Ministry was filled with hundreds of witches and wizards.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

One of the most popular highlights of the Harry Potter Studio Tour is Platform 9\u00be<\/strong> with the iconic Hogwarts Express<\/strong>. At the Warner Bros. Studio, a large section of King’s Cross Station platform has been recreated, complete with the famous steam locomotive that carried students to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. During your visit, you can explore the entire set and even step inside several of the train carriages.<\/p>\n

Most of the scenes set on Platform 9\u00be were filmed at King’s Cross Station in London. However, for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows \u2013 Part 2<\/em>, part of the platform was rebuilt at the Leavesden Studios, including the tracks and the Hogwarts Express. This allowed the final scenes of the film to be filmed without interruption.<\/p>\n

You can also have your photo taken with the famous luggage trolley disappearing halfway through the wall at Platform 9\u00be. In addition, you’re free to explore several carriages of the Hogwarts Express. Inside, you’ll see famous scenes from the films, including the moment in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone<\/em> when Harry buys all the sweets from the trolley to share with Ron.<\/p>\n

During my visits, I noticed that this area is much quieter than the Platform 9\u00be photo spot at King’s Cross Station in London. Every time I visited King’s Cross, there was a long queue to take a photo. At the studio, I was able to get my picture much more quickly and had plenty of time to look around at my own pace.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

After the restaurant, you’ll arrive at The Backlot<\/strong>, the outdoor area of the Harry Potter Studio Tour. Here, you’ll find several outdoor film sets and props that were used throughout the Harry Potter movies.<\/p>\n

One of the most famous sets is the house on Privet Drive<\/strong>, where Harry Potter grew up with the Dursley family. You can even step inside the house and explore several of its rooms. You’ll also find the iconic purple Knight Bus<\/strong>, which took Harry to the Leaky Cauldron in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban<\/em>.<\/p>\n

You’ll also walk past the wooden Hogwarts Bridge and see the giant chess pieces from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone<\/em>. It’s a great part of the tour where you can enjoy some fresh air while getting a close look at several well-known film sets.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Next to The Backlot<\/strong>, you’ll find the Backlot Caf\u00e9<\/strong>, where you can try the famous Butterbeer<\/strong>. This popular drink from the Harry Potter films is high on the must-try list for many visitors. When you order a Butterbeer, it’s served in a sturdy plastic souvenir cup that you can take home after your visit.<\/p>\n

Butterbeer is a sweet drink with a creamy foam topping and a flavour that resembles cream soda with a hint of vanilla. The foam, which is actually made from whipped cream, bubbles just like it does in the films. During my visits, my children really enjoyed it. Personally, I was happy to try it once because it’s simply part of the Harry Potter Studio Tour experience.<\/p>\n

A useful tip: next to the Backlot Caf\u00e9, you’ll find special rinsing stations where you can easily wash out your souvenir cup before putting it in your bag. I wouldn’t recommend taking the Butterbeer itself home. The foam quickly disappears, and the drink doesn’t stay fresh for long. It’s much better to enjoy it while you’re there and take the clean souvenir cup home as a keepsake.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

During my visit in 2022, several new sets had been added to the Harry Potter Studio Tour, including Professor Sprout’s Greenhouses<\/strong>. This greenhouse has been fully recreated and is based on the scene from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets<\/em>. In my opinion, it’s one of the most enjoyable and interactive parts of the entire tour. While many of the sets are mainly there to admire, this greenhouse is designed to be experienced.<\/p>\n

The absolute highlight is the interactive Mandrake<\/strong>. Just like Harry, Ron, and Hermione in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets<\/em>, you can pull a Mandrake from its flowerpot. As soon as you do, the plant starts screaming loudly and wriggling wildly. It makes for a fun experience as well as some great photos and videos.<\/p>\n

Since almost every visitor wants to try the Mandrake, there can be a short queue on busy days. During my visits, I found that the line moved quickly. The greenhouse is located in the outdoor area, close to The Backlot<\/strong> and the Backlot Caf\u00e9<\/strong>, making it easy to combine this part of the tour with a short break or a glass of Butterbeer.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

During the Harry Potter Studio Tour, you’ll discover how many of the famous scenes from the films were brought to life using special effects and visual effects. You’ll learn how scenes are filmed using a green screen and how they are later combined with digitally created backgrounds. I found it fascinating to see how much work goes into just a few minutes of film. At the same time, it’s a little disappointing to realise that much of the magical world of Harry Potter was created through filmmaking techniques.<\/p>\n

You can also experience these techniques for yourself during your visit. You can have your photo taken while flying through the air on a broomstick or sitting inside a compartment of the Hogwarts Express. In addition, you can record a video of yourself taking part in a Quidditch match while riding a broomstick. These photos and videos are available for an additional fee.<\/p>\n

Besides the paid photo and video experiences, there are also free interactive activities. For example, you can take part in a short wand lesson, where you’ll learn how to use a wand correctly. During my visit in 2022, I explored the Gringotts Wizarding Bank<\/strong> set for the first time. This impressive expansion opened in April 2019 and is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful parts of the Harry Potter Studio Tour. As soon as you step into the enormous banking hall, the sheer scale of the set immediately stands out. It was built by the original Harry Potter film crew and recreated down to the smallest detail.
