The Eiffel Tower is one of the most famous sights in Paris<\/a>. For many visitors, a first city trip to Paris<\/a> is therefore not complete without seeing the Eiffel Tower up close. But is it also worth going up the Eiffel Tower?<\/p>\n

In this article, I share my experience and tell you what you can expect during a visit. I also give practical tips and explain which tickets you can buy. The Eiffel Tower was built between 1887 and 1889, based on a design by the French engineer Gustave Eiffel. The structure was part of the 1889 World\u2019s Fair in Paris and quickly became one of the city\u2019s most famous symbols.<\/p>\n

Including its antennas, the Eiffel Tower is approximately 330 metres high. The four legs stand on a square base that is about 125 metres wide. The metal structure weighs more than 7,000 tonnes. The Eiffel Tower opened to visitors on May 15, 1889. During the first few weeks, the elevators were not yet ready, so visitors had to use the stairs to reach the first and second floors.<\/p>\n

Originally, the plan was to dismantle the Eiffel Tower after twenty years. However, the tower proved to be too valuable for radio and communication purposes, among other things. As a result, it remained standing and became a permanent part of the Paris skyline.<\/p>\n

The Eiffel Tower is also hard to miss in the evening. Thousands of lights illuminate the tower, creating a short light show every hour after sunset. I have visited Paris several times over the past fifteen years and have also climbed the Eiffel Tower several times during these visits. Personally, I definitely think a visit to the Eiffel Tower is worth it, especially if you are visiting Paris for the first time.<\/p>\n

From the Eiffel Tower, you have a beautiful view of Paris and the Seine. On a clear day, you can see famous places and landmarks in the city, such as the Arc de Triomphe<\/a> and the Louvre<\/a>. You can look out over the city from different heights, which makes each visit feel different.<\/p>\n

My favourite time to visit the Eiffel Tower is around sunset. You can see Paris slowly change from a busy city into a sea of lights. Once it gets dark, the Eiffel Tower sparkles every hour. Personally, I think this is one of the most beautiful moments of a visit.<\/p>\n

I have visited and climbed all three levels. Still, I personally think the view from the second floor is the most beautiful. It is high enough to give you a great view over Paris, while there is more space to look around peacefully. At the top, on the other hand, it can be quite crowded, which sometimes makes it harder to fully enjoy the view.<\/p>\n

You do need to plan a visit to the Eiffel Tower carefully. Especially on busy days, waiting times can become very long if you do not have a ticket booked in advance. Even with a ticket, you need to take the security check into account before entering.<\/p>\n

My conclusion is therefore clear: yes, I think a visit to the Eiffel Tower is worth it.<\/strong> Especially if it is your first visit to Paris. The ground level of the Eiffel Tower, the esplanade beneath the tower, can be visited for free. You do not need a ticket for this. However, you must first go through the security check at the entrance to the site. So even if you only want to walk around beneath the Eiffel Tower, you should expect some waiting time.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Once you are on the esplanade, you are literally standing between the four enormous legs of the Eiffel Tower. From here, you get a very different view of the monument than from the higher levels. Especially when looking up, you can clearly see how impressive the iron structure is.<\/p>\n

At ground level, you can see the four legs of the tower, learn more about the history of the Eiffel Tower and make use of various facilities. There are shops, food and drink outlets, toilets and an information point.<\/p>\n

You can also choose to decide on the spot whether you want to go up the Eiffel Tower. There are ticket offices on the esplanade where you can buy a ticket, depending on availability. Keep in mind that you may have to wait longer than if you have purchased a ticket with a time slot in advance. The first floor is one of the places where you can spend a little more time looking around during your visit. You can reach this floor by lift or by stairs. From the ground level, there are 328 steps.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

On this floor, you can find information about the history of the Eiffel Tower and watch short videos. One of the most striking features is the glass floor. From a height of around 57 metres, you can look straight down and see the people on the esplanade below you.<\/p>\n

You can also find Madame Brasserie here, the Eiffel Tower\u2019s restaurant. If you want to eat or have a drink with a view over Paris during your visit, this is the place to go.<\/p>\n

The second floor of the Eiffel Tower is my favourite viewpoint. Personally, I think this is where you get the best view of Paris. The floor is located at a height of around 115 metres and can be reached by lift or stairs.<\/p>\n

From here, you can look far across Paris and enjoy views of several famous landmarks. On a clear day, you can see the Arc de Triomphe, the Sacr\u00e9-C\u0153ur and the Tour Montparnasse, among others.<\/p>\n

What I personally like about this floor is that you are high enough to see a large part of Paris. For me, this makes the view more interesting than the view from the top.<\/p>\n

Le Jules Verne, the famous restaurant of the Eiffel Tower, is also located on the second floor. The restaurant has a Michelin star and is particularly interesting if you want to enjoy a special meal during your visit. The top of the Eiffel Tower is located approximately 275 metres above the ground. From the second floor, you can only reach the top by lift. The stairs to the top are not accessible to visitors. To visit the top, you therefore need a ticket that gives you access to this highest part of the Eiffel Tower.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

From the top, you have an impressive view over Paris. You can see even farther across the city and, on a clear day, spot several famous places in the distance. A visit to the top is therefore very popular. The times I have visited myself, it was regularly quite crowded. Because the space at the top is much smaller than on the second floor, I sometimes find it harder to fully enjoy the view here.<\/p>\n

At the top, you can also take a look at Gustave Eiffel’s former office. You cannot enter the office, but through the windows you can see wax figures of Gustave Eiffel, his daughter Claire and Thomas Edison. I personally found this quite interesting, which is why I definitely think the top is worth visiting at least once.<\/p>\n

I have visited all three levels of the Eiffel Tower several times and personally, I think the second floor is the most beautiful. If you are mainly visiting the Eiffel Tower for the view, I would personally choose the second floor. You get a beautiful view over Paris and can easily recognise many famous landmarks. I also think this is the best spot for photos.<\/p>\n

Would you rather stand as high as possible and have the feeling that you are standing above all of Paris? Then the top is a great addition to your visit. You can also see Gustave Eiffel’s former office here and order a drink at the champagne bar.<\/p>\n

The first floor is especially enjoyable if you want to experience the Eiffel Tower up close. The Eiffel Tower is easily accessible from various parts of Paris. Personally, I find the metro the easiest way to get to the Eiffel Tower, but if you are staying in central Paris, you can also easily walk there.<\/p>\n

By metro<\/h3>\n

There are several metro stations near the Eiffel Tower. The most convenient options are Bir Hakeim on metro line 6 and Trocad\u00e9ro on metro line 9. From both stations, it is about a ten- to fifteen-minute walk to the Eiffel Tower.<\/p>\n

Trocad\u00e9ro station is especially a nice option if you are visiting the Eiffel Tower for the first time. From here, you walk towards the Seine and get a beautiful view of the tower along the way.<\/p>\n

On foot<\/h3>\n

If you are staying near the centre of Paris, you can also walk to the Eiffel Tower. This is often more enjoyable than taking the metro, as you get to see various streets and neighbourhoods of Paris along the way.<\/p>\n

From the Arc de Triomphe, for example, it takes about 25 to 30 minutes to walk. Along the way, you can walk via Avenue Kl\u00e9ber and Trocad\u00e9ro towards the Seine.
