The Shard in London stands on the banks of the River Thames, close to the Tower Bridge<\/a>. The striking building with its glass fa\u00e7ade is one of the best-known landmarks of the London skyline. At the top of The Shard, visitors can enjoy panoramic views over London from the observation deck.<\/p>\n

But is it really worth visiting the observation decks at The Shard?<\/p>\n

In this article, I share my own experience and explain what you can expect during a visit. I also provide practical information about tickets, the different floors, and the best time to visit The Shard. The Shard is one of the most famous buildings in London and was designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano. The skyscraper is located close to Tower Bridge and, with its striking glass fa\u00e7ade, is impossible to miss in the city skyline.<\/p>\n

The design of The Shard was inspired by the spires of churches and cathedrals. The different glass fa\u00e7ades slope upwards, giving the building the shape of a huge shard of glass. In total, around 11,000 glass panels were used. Depending on the light and weather, the appearance of the building can therefore look different throughout the day.<\/p>\n

At the top of The Shard is The View from The Shard, the observation deck specifically designed for visitors. The visit takes you to different floors, with the highest public area on the 72nd floor. From here, you have panoramic views over London.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

I have visited The Shard several times over the past fifteen years during a city trip to London<\/a>. Personally, I think a visit to The Shard is definitely worth it, especially if you are visiting London for the first time.<\/p>\n

From the observation decks, you can see incredibly far across the city on a clear day. You can see famous landmarks such as Tower Bridge, the London Eye<\/a>, Big Ben, the Tower of London<\/a>, the Walkie Talkie building and St. Paul’s Cathedral<\/a>. I also enjoy seeing how the River Thames winds its way through London, with the many boats travelling along the water.<\/p>\n

However, there is also a downside to visiting The Shard: I find the regular tickets quite expensive. Especially when you compare them with other famous observation decks I have visited, such as One World Observatory<\/a> and SUMMIT One Vanderbilt<\/a> in New York<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The biggest difference is mainly the way you experience the view. The Shard is essentially a fairly traditional observation deck. You take the lift to the top, look out over London, perhaps have a drink and take your time enjoying the view. The observation decks in New York<\/a> are much more interactive and visually impressive. The prices of the different observation decks are also fairly similar.<\/p>\n

In recent years, several free alternatives have also been added in London. Sky Garden and Horizon 22, for example, are popular places to enjoy free views over the city. These viewpoints cannot be compared with The Shard in terms of height, but they are interesting options if you are travelling to London on a limited budget.<\/p>\n

Still, I would personally choose The Shard again. The free viewpoints are completely enclosed by glass or have only a small balcony. The 72nd floor of The Shard is different. Here, you are actually standing outdoors, at the top of the glass tower.<\/p>\n

At around 244 metres above the ground, you notice that too. You can hear the city, feel the wind and are literally standing above London. That experience is what makes The Shard more than just a place to look at the view for me.<\/p>\n

My verdict:<\/strong> if you find the price of an observation deck ticket expensive, there are good free alternatives in London. However, if you want to combine the highest views in London with the experience of an open-air platform high above the city, I definitely think The Shard is worth visiting.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The View from The Shard is spread across several floors and offers impressive views over London. During your visit, you get a different perspective of the city from each level. To reach the observation decks on the 68th and 69th floors, you first take the lift upwards. The ride to the top is more than just a way to reach the observation deck as quickly as possible. Video screens are built into the ceiling of the lift, showing images of London and the city’s skyline.<\/p>\n

You first go to the 33rd floor. There, you transfer to another lift that takes you further up to The Shard’s observation decks. The fast ride to the top means you reach a great height in a short amount of time.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

On the 68th floor, you reach the large panoramic windows that stretch from floor to ceiling for the first time. From here, you have unobstructed views over London and can see the city from different directions.<\/p>\n

This floor also has a small educational section with information about the different types of clouds that occur above London. There is also a bar where you can order a glass of champagne or a cocktail.<\/p>\n

The Sky Boutique is also located on the 68th floor. Here, you can buy souvenirs and other items related to The Shard. Prices are somewhat higher than at many regular souvenir shops. This is not surprising, as the shop is located inside The Shard and is mainly aimed at visitors to the attraction.<\/p>\n

A notable detail is the toilets on this floor. The large windows offer views over the River Thames while you are using the toilet. It is something fun to see at least once, although personally, I find the view from the toilets at SUMMIT One Vanderbilt in New York even more spectacular.<\/p>\n

From the 68th floor, you can take the stairs or a smaller lift up to the 69th floor. This is where a larger enclosed observation deck begins.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

On the 69th floor, you will find the main indoor observation deck of The View from The Shard. This is probably the floor where you will spend the most time if you want to take in the views over London at your leisure.<\/p>\n

The large glass space offers panoramic views over the city. On a clear day, you can see for dozens of kilometres. From the windows, you can see famous landmarks such as Tower Bridge, the Tower of London, St. Paul’s Cathedral, the River Thames and the London Eye.<\/p>\n

This floor is also home to the larger champagne and cocktail bar, Mo\u00ebt & Chandon Over the Moon. Here, you can order champagne, cocktails, gin and tonics, hot drinks and snacks.<\/p>\n

There are various seating areas around the windows. This allows you to sit back and enjoy the view with a drink without having to stand by the windows all the time.<\/p>\n

Digital telescopes, known as Tellscopes, are located throughout the floor. These allow you to zoom in on different parts of London and get more information about the buildings and landmarks you can see. This is especially useful if you want to know exactly what you are looking at.<\/p>\n

From the 69th floor, you can take the stairs further up to the 72nd floor. This is where the experience changes, as you are partially outdoors.<\/p>\n

On the 72nd floor, you reach what I consider the highlight of a visit to The Shard: the open-air Skydeck. This is the highest publicly accessible part of The Shard, at around 244 metres above the ground. Personally, this is my favourite viewpoint of the entire attraction.<\/p>\n

The glass points of the skyscraper rise around you, while a large part of the platform is open to the sky. This makes the floor feel very different from the fully enclosed observation decks on the 68th and 69th floors.<\/p>\n

Here, you can hear the wind and the sounds of London below you. You also immediately notice the effect of the weather. On a windy day, it can be quite chilly, especially if you stay outside for a longer period. Bringing an extra jacket is therefore not a bad idea.<\/p>\n

A large part of the floor is covered with green artificial grass. This creates a striking contrast with the glass and steel of the skyscraper and almost gives you the feeling of being in a small garden high above London.<\/p>\n

There is also a small bar on the 72nd floor where you can order a drink. In addition, this is a popular place for taking photos. Because you can look over parts of the glass structure from the open-air platform, you get a very different view of London than from the enclosed floors.<\/p>\n

Which floor of The Shard is the best depends mainly on the type of experience you are looking for. The 68th, 69th and 72nd floors each have their own character.<\/p>\n

Personally, I think the 72nd floor is the most beautiful. The fact that you are outdoors makes the biggest difference for me. You experience the height much more strongly than behind the glass windows of the enclosed floors.<\/p>\n

The glass points of The Shard also give this floor something special. You are literally standing among the glass shards at the top of the building, creating unique views of the sky and the city. Your ticket gives you access to the 68th, 69th and 72nd floors. During your visit, you can decide for yourself where you want to spend the most time and move between the floors.<\/p>\n

Then definitely go to the 72nd floor. The open-air platform is where you experience the height at its best and can fully enjoy the views.<\/p>\n

Cold, windy or rainy weather?<\/strong>
Start on the 69th floor. There, you can comfortably enjoy the views from behind the windows. You can always go up to the 72nd floor later if the weather improves.<\/p>\n

Visiting as a couple?<\/strong>
The 69th floor is a great place to sit by the window with a drink. The bar and seating areas make this floor ideal if you want to spend a little more time enjoying the view.<\/p>\n

Then I would go to the 72nd floor. The open-air platform and the glass structure of The Shard create a very different backdrop from the enclosed floors.<\/p>\n

Allow approximately 1 to 1.5 hours for a visit to The View from The Shard. How long you ultimately stay depends mainly on how much time you want to spend enjoying the views, taking photos and having a drink.<\/p>\n

There is no fixed time limit once you are inside. This means you can take your time exploring the different floors and enjoying the views.<\/p>\n

If you are mainly visiting for the views and photos, you can keep your visit relatively short. In that case, allow around one hour.<\/p>\n

If you want to take your time and perhaps enjoy a cocktail or glass of champagne on the 69th or 72nd floor, you can easily spend 1.5 to 2 hours inside.<\/p>\n

A popular option is to visit The Shard about an hour before sunset. You can then see London first in daylight, followed by the sunset, and finally watch as the city gradually lights up. If you choose this option, it is wise to allow around 2 hours for your visit.<\/p>\n

When is the best time to visit The Shard depends mainly on what is most important to you. Do you want to see the skyline in the best light during both the day and at night, or would you rather visit The Shard at a quieter time?<\/p>\n

Personally, I think sunset is by far the best time to visit The Shard in London. You essentially get three different views during one visit. First, you see London in daylight, then the sky changes colour during sunset, and finally you can see the thousands of city lights coming on.<\/p>\n

My tip: choose a time slot around 45 to 60 minutes before official sunset. This gives you enough time to go upstairs and find a spot by the windows or on the 72nd floor before the sun sets.<\/p>\n

Keep in mind that this is also one of the most popular times to visit The Shard. It can therefore be busier around sunset, and popular time slots can fill up quickly.<\/p>\n

Visiting The Shard when it is quieter<\/h3>\n
