Over the past fifteen years, I have visited Barcelona several times and have seen many of the city\u2019s well-known sights<\/a>. Yet there is always something new to discover in this city. During a first city trip, it is impossible to see everything, especially since the sights are spread across different parts of Barcelona. That is why it is useful to decide in advance which places you would like to visit, especially if you are only staying in the city for a few days.<\/p>\n

To help you with this, I have made my own selection of ten attractions in Barcelona that I think are worth visiting during a first trip. For each attraction, I provide practical information and my tips. The Sagrada Fam\u00edlia is one of the most famous works by Antoni Gaud\u00ed and, in my opinion, an attraction that you should not miss during your first city trip to Barcelona. The basilica is already impressive from the outside, but I find the interior particularly special.<\/p>\n

I visit the Sagrada Fam\u00edlia regularly. I especially love seeing the colourful light coming through the stained-glass windows every time. The columns inside the basilica are designed to resemble trees with branches. This makes the interior feel very different from that of a traditional church.<\/p>\n

The towers are also highly recommended in my opinion. You can visit some of the towers, and from there you have a beautiful view over Barcelona. For me, the combination of the interior and the view from the towers makes the visit complete.<\/p>\n

Construction of the Sagrada Fam\u00edlia began in 1882, and the basilica is still not fully completed. This makes a visit even more special. Here, you are not only seeing a famous building by Gaud\u00ed, but also a building that is still being worked on.<\/p>\n

Parc G\u00fcell is one of the best-known places in Barcelona and a great introduction to the distinctive style of Antoni Gaud\u00ed. The park is located in the northeast of the city and combines colourful mosaics, striking buildings and nature. It is precisely this combination that makes Parc G\u00fcell different from many other attractions in Barcelona.<\/p>\n

The park was originally intended to be an exclusive residential area, but that plan never got off the ground. Eventually, the area became part of the city and was opened to visitors. Parc G\u00fcell has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984.<\/p>\n

Personally, I find the famous staircase with the mosaic salamander, El Drac, one of the most beautiful spots in the park. The salamander is covered with colourful pieces of mosaic, making it immediately stand out. The staircase and the buildings around it clearly show how playfully Gaud\u00ed worked with shapes, colours and elements from nature.<\/p>\n

Casa Batll\u00f3 is one of the most striking buildings on Passeig de Gr\u00e0cia and a well-known work by Antoni Gaud\u00ed. The undulating fa\u00e7ade, colourful mosaics and organic shapes make the building instantly recognisable. The design contains various references to nature and Catalan culture. The fa\u00e7ade is often associated with a dragon and the legend of Saint George.<\/p>\n

Inside, you can also see Gaud\u00ed\u2019s distinctive design style. You can visit various rooms, including the Gaud\u00ed Dome and Cube. However, I find the rooftop terrace one of the most beautiful parts of Casa Batll\u00f3. From the roof, you have views over Barcelona\u2019s skyline and the mountains surrounding the city.<\/p>\n

If you are visiting Barcelona for the first time and want to discover Gaud\u00ed\u2019s architecture, I definitely think Casa Batll\u00f3 is worth visiting. Casa Mil\u00e0, better known as La Pedrera, is one of Antoni Gaud\u00ed\u2019s most famous works. The building is located on Passeig de Gr\u00e0cia and immediately stands out because of its undulating fa\u00e7ade and organic shapes. Gaud\u00ed designed Casa Mil\u00e0 between 1906 and 1912. The building looks different from most other buildings in Barcelona, both from the outside and inside.<\/p>\n

During a visit, you can explore different parts of Casa Mil\u00e0. These include the rooftop terrace, the attics, the courtyards and furnished rooms. I especially enjoy the furnished apartment. Here, you get an idea of what an apartment belonging to a wealthy family at the beginning of the twentieth century looked like. The furniture, floors and other details give you a good impression of everyday life during that period.<\/p>\n

The rooftop terrace is also one of my favourite places in Casa Mil\u00e0. The striking chimneys and other structures on the roof are already a reason to go upstairs, but I especially enjoy the views over Barcelona. On a clear day, you can see sights including the Sagrada Fam\u00edlia and Montju\u00efc hill.<\/p>\n

If you want to visit several of Gaud\u00ed\u2019s works during your city trip to Barcelona, I would definitely put Casa Mil\u00e0 on your list. Casa Vicens is one of Antoni Gaud\u00ed\u2019s lesser-known works in Barcelona, but it is definitely worth visiting if you want to discover more of his architecture. The colourful building is located in the Gr\u00e0cia district and was originally designed as a summer house for Manuel Vicens. The fa\u00e7ade, with its colourful tiles and detailed decorations, looks very different from Gaud\u00ed\u2019s more famous works.<\/p>\n

During a visit, you can explore various rooms and see how Gaud\u00ed worked with colours, shapes and patterns. The garden and terrace are also part of the visit. Casa Vicens therefore provides a good insight into an early period of Gaud\u00ed\u2019s work.<\/p>\n

Personally, I also find the rooftop terrace one of the most beautiful parts of the building. From the roof, you have views over Gr\u00e0cia and can see the neighbourhood from a different perspective.<\/p>\n

I would especially recommend Casa Vicens if you want to see several of Gaud\u00ed\u2019s works during your city trip to Barcelona. The building is smaller and less well known than, for example, the Sagrada Fam\u00edlia and Casa Batll\u00f3. La Rambla is one of the best-known and most touristy streets in Barcelona. The boulevard runs from Pla\u00e7a de Catalunya towards the port and is approximately 1.2 kilometres long. During a walk, you will pass kiosks, flower stalls, terraces, shops and various street performers.<\/p>\n

La Rambla is especially nice to walk along once and experience the atmosphere of Barcelona. It is usually busy, and you will encounter relatively few local residents here. Nevertheless, in my opinion, a walk along La Rambla is part of a first visit to Barcelona.<\/p>\n

Along the way, you can easily turn into a side street and explore the surrounding area. The Gothic Quarter, for example, is located right next to La Rambla. You can therefore easily combine both places during a walk through Barcelona\u2019s historic centre.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The Picasso Museum Barcelona is one of the city\u2019s best-known museums and an interesting place if you want to learn more about the work of Pablo Picasso. The museum has several floors and houses a large collection of thousands of artworks. You can see both well-known works and paintings from Picasso\u2019s earlier period.<\/p>\n

What I find interesting about the museum is that you can not only admire famous artworks, but also see how Picasso developed as an artist. The collection therefore gives you a good impression of different stages of his career.<\/p>\n

If you want to visit the Picasso Museum during your city trip, I recommend booking your ticket online in advance. The museum is popular, and on busy days there can be a long queue at the entrance. By arranging your ticket in advance, you can avoid wasting unnecessary time waiting during your city trip.<\/p>\n

The Picasso Museum is located in the El Born district, making it easy to combine a visit with a walk through this lively neighbourhood and Barcelona\u2019s historic centre.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

One of the nicest ways to explore Montju\u00efc, in my opinion, is by taking the cable car to the top of the mountain. This is where you will find Castell de Montju\u00efc, a historic fortress with a long and eventful history.<\/p>\n

You can reach Montju\u00efc in several ways, but I personally like taking the cable car. During the ride up, you have beautiful views over Barcelona and the surrounding area. This means the experience starts before you even arrive at the top of Montju\u00efc.<\/p>\n

Once you reach the top, you can visit Castell de Montju\u00efc and enjoy the views over the city and the port. For me, it is precisely the combination of the cable car, the views and the historic castle that makes this a worthwhile place to visit during a city trip to Barcelona.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Sant Sebasti\u00e0 Beach is one of the best-known beaches in Barcelona and a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city for a while during your city trip. The beach is located close to the city centre and is therefore easy to reach. You can swim, sunbathe or simply take a walk along the water.<\/p>\n

The beach is spacious and has various facilities, including toilets, showers, lifeguards, kiosks and parasol and sun lounger rentals. This makes Sant Sebasti\u00e0 a good option if you want to take it easy for a few hours.<\/p>\n

Personally, I like the beach especially because you experience a completely different side of Barcelona here. After a morning surrounded by buildings, museums and other attractions, you can relax here for a while with views over the Mediterranean Sea.<\/p>\n

If you also want to make time for sun, sea and beach during your city trip to Barcelona, I think Sant Sebasti\u00e0 Beach is a good choice. You do not need to set aside an entire day for it either. A few hours at the beach are enough to take a break from your city trip.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The Gothic Quarter is the historic heart of Barcelona and one of the nicest parts of the city to explore on foot. The neighbourhood is located between La Rambla and Via Laietana and consists of a maze of narrow streets, small squares and historic buildings.
