Rome is a city with an incredible number of sights. From centuries-old monuments and impressive squares to world-famous fountains and historic buildings. With such a huge variety, it can sometimes be difficult to decide what you really need to see during a city trip to Rome<\/a>, especially if you only have a few days.<\/p>\n

Over the past ten years, I have visited Rome several times and have visited most of the sights more than once. As a result, I now know which places you really should not miss during your first visit to Rome.<\/p>\n

To help you get started, I have put together an overview of ten sights in Rome that you really should not miss during your first city trip. I also share practical tips, useful information and an example of a four-day itinerary in Rome. The Colosseum is one of the most famous sights in Rome and a place that you really should not miss during your first city trip to Rome. The almost 2,000-year-old amphitheater is an impressive remnant of the Roman Empire and is still a striking part of the cityscape.<\/p>\n

The Colosseum was built to entertain the people of Rome with large spectacles. Gladiator fights and hunts involving wild animals, among other events, took place in the arena. Public executions were also carried out. Over the centuries, many people and animals lost their lives during these spectacles.<\/p>\n

Today, you can visit the Colosseum and explore different parts of the ancient amphitheater. The combination of the enormous size of the building and the history that took place here makes a visit particularly special. The Roman Forum is located between the Capitoline Hill and the Colosseum. During the Roman Empire, this was the center of public life in Rome. Religious ceremonies took place here, important political decisions were discussed, and residents gathered for various public events.<\/p>\n

After the decline of the Roman Empire, the Roman Forum gradually fell into disrepair over the centuries, and parts of the area became covered. Archaeological excavations began in the 18th and 19th centuries. As a result, many of the remains you see here today were uncovered once again.<\/p>\n

Palatine Hill is one of the seven hills of Rome and is located directly next to the Roman Forum. According to legend, Rome was founded by Romulus on this hill. Historically, Palatine Hill is best known as the place where wealthy Romans and later emperors had large homes and palaces built.<\/p>\n

During a walk around Palatine Hill, you will come across the remains of imperial palaces, temples and gardens. From various spots, you also have a beautiful view over the Roman Forum.<\/p>\n

The Pantheon is one of the best-preserved monuments from ancient Rome and one of the most impressive buildings you can visit during a city trip to Rome. The original building was constructed around 27 BC on the orders of Marcus Agrippa, an important general and close confidant of Emperor Augustus. The Pantheon you see today was largely rebuilt later under Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD, after earlier buildings on this site had been destroyed by fire.<\/p>\n

The most striking feature of the Pantheon is its enormous dome. In the center is the oculus, a circular opening approximately 9 meters wide through which daylight enters. As the day progresses, the light moves across the walls and floor of the building, giving the interior a different appearance throughout the day. The oculus probably also had a symbolic meaning and may have represented a connection between the temple and the heavens.<\/p>\n

What makes the Pantheon so special to me is that you can still get a good impression of the impressive architectural skills of the Romans here. The large dome, the enormous interior and the age of the building are truly impressive. You are standing in a structure that was built almost two thousand years ago and is still largely standing today.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

The Trevi Fountain, known in Italian as Fontana di Trevi, is one of the most famous sights in Rome. The fountain is located in the heart of the historic center and is difficult to miss when walking through the city. Many visitors come here to admire the impressive Baroque fountain, take photos and, of course, throw a coin into the water.<\/p>\n

The Trevi Fountain is special because of its large Baroque design and the way the fountain forms part of the Palazzo Poli. In the center stands the sea god Oceanus on a shell-shaped chariot, pulled by two sea horses and accompanied by tritons. The horses represent the calm and the wild sea. This gives the whole scene a lively character.<\/p>\n

The tradition of throwing a coin is also part of a visit to the Trevi Fountain. According to the well-known legend, you will return to Rome someday if you throw a coin over your left shoulder into the fountain. It has now become a regular part of a visit and gives many tourists the opportunity to take a fun photo.<\/p>\n

You can view the Trevi Fountain from the square without paying an entrance fee. Since February 2, 2026, however, tourists and non-residents have to pay \u20ac2 if they want to enter the restricted area directly around the water. The Spanish Steps are located in the heart of Rome\u2019s historic center and connect Piazza di Spagna with the higher church of Trinit\u00e0 dei Monti. The church dates back to the 16th century and is located on Pincian Hill. The Spanish Steps are one of the most famous places in Rome and attract many visitors every day.<\/p>\n

The Spanish Steps consist of 135 travertine steps and connect the square with the church of Trinit\u00e0 dei Monti. At the foot of the steps is the Fontana della Barcaccia, a fountain shaped like a half-sunken boat.<\/p>\n

What makes this place so special is the combination of architecture, history and lively atmosphere. Tourists and locals come together here, making Piazza di Spagna one of the most recognizable places in Rome. Piazza Navona is one of the most famous squares in Rome and is located in the heart of the historic center. The square stands out for its Baroque buildings, impressive fountains and lively atmosphere. It is a place where you can easily spend some time during a walk through Rome.<\/p>\n

The square is located on the site of the former Stadium of Domitian, which was built in the 1st century AD. The current shape of Piazza Navona was created in the 17th century, when the square was redesigned in the Baroque style. The church of Sant\u2019Agnese in Agone and the surrounding buildings, together with the fountains, create the square\u2019s distinctive appearance.<\/p>\n

Piazza Navona is particularly famous for its three fountains. In the center of the square stands the impressive Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. This fountain represents four great rivers: the Danube, the Ganges, the Nile and the R\u00edo de la Plata. At the northern and southern ends of the square are the Fontana di Nettuno and the Fontana del Moro.<\/p>\n

What I like about Piazza Navona is that you don\u2019t come here only for the sights. It is also a great place to experience the atmosphere of Rome. St. Peter\u2019s Basilica stands on the impressive St. Peter\u2019s Square<\/a> in Vatican City<\/a> and is one of the most famous churches in the world. Construction of the current basilica began in 1506 and took more than a hundred years to complete. Several famous artists and architects worked on the building, including Michelangelo, who played an important role in the design of the enormous dome.<\/p>\n

The basilica is also very impressive inside. As soon as you walk in, the enormous space immediately stands out. The interior is richly decorated with marble, statues and works of art. The large dome is one of the most striking features and largely determines the appearance of the interior.<\/p>\n

St. Peter\u2019s Basilica also has a special religious significance. According to Catholic tradition, the tomb of the apostle Peter, who is considered the first pope, lies beneath the basilica. As a result, the basilica has been an important place for pilgrims from all over the world for centuries.<\/p>\n

But even if you are not religious, visiting St. Peter\u2019s Basilica is well worth it. The Vatican Museums are among the most famous museums in the world and are located in Vatican City. The museum complex consists of various museums, galleries and chapels that have been collected and expanded by different popes over the centuries.<\/p>\n

During a visit, you walk past a huge collection of art and historical objects from different periods. You will find sculptures, paintings and antiquities from Greek, Roman and Egyptian history, among other things. Renaissance art is also strongly represented here.<\/p>\n

The most famous part of the Vatican Museums is the Sistine Chapel<\/a>. The chapel is particularly famous for the ceiling that Michelangelo painted in the 16th century. The paintings make a visit special, but the route through the museums is also impressive. Along the way, you will pass historic rooms, richly decorated halls and countless works of art.<\/p>\n

The Vatican Museums are therefore highly recommended if you are interested in art, history and culture during your city trip to Rome. Castel Sant’Angelo, also known as the Castel of the Holy Angel, is a striking building on the banks of the Tiber, close to Vatican City. There was only room for a limited number of visitors at the time, and the queue quickly grew longer. In the end, I waited for about an hour and a half in the full sun. I had not brought enough water with me and also ended up getting quite badly sunburned.<\/p>\n

April through June and September and October are generally pleasant months for a city trip to Rome. The temperatures are often comfortable for doing a lot of walking and visiting several sights in one day. Especially during the warmer months, I find it more pleasant to head out early.<\/p>\n

My advice is therefore to visit popular sights as early in the day as possible. Places such as the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, St. Peter\u2019s Basilica and the Vatican Museums become increasingly busy as the morning progresses. You then have to deal with tourists, groups and day-trippers. Around 11:00 AM, I often notice that these sights are already significantly busier.<\/p>\n

I have visited many sights in Rome at different times of the day. In my experience, you can often look around more peacefully early in the day. For the ten sights in Rome that I mentioned in this article, I would allow around 16 to 18 hours in total if you want to see them at a leisurely pace. On top of that, you need to allow time for walking between the different places, possible queues and security checks. In practice, you will therefore need several days if you want to visit all of these sights.<\/p>\n

You will spend the most time at the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel. Allow a large part of a day for these. You will also need several hours for the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill if you want to explore these places at a leisurely pace.<\/p>\n

For St. Peter\u2019s Basilica, you can allow around one and a half to two hours. If you also want to visit the dome, you will need some extra time. For Castel Sant\u2019Angelo, I would allow around one and a half hours.<\/p>\n

The other sights are easier to combine. You need less time for the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona and the Spanish Steps individually. These places are also located in the historic center and can easily be combined during a walk.<\/p>\n

Keep in mind that these are guidelines. The amount of time you spend at each place naturally depends on your own interests and pace.
