The first three levels can be recognized by the rows of arches with half-columns. On my first visit, I wanted to visit the Colosseum spontaneously, but because of the long queues at the ticket offices, I wasn\u2019t able to buy a ticket in time. As a result, I couldn\u2019t see the inside of the Colosseum back then.<\/p>\n<p>On later visits, I always bought my tickets in advance. I usually choose an audio ticket so I can walk around at my own pace, but I\u2019ve also booked guided tours a few times. Personally, I think a tour is really worth it if you want to learn more about the history of the building, the gladiator fights, and the architecture. If you mainly come to admire the monument and take some nice photos, an audio ticket is often more than sufficient.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve visited the Colosseum at different times of day and can recommend going as early as possible, right after opening. Then you have time to explore the building calmly and take photos or videos. If you go later in the day, it\u2019s often so crowded that you move almost step by step through the Colosseum and hardly have the space to really look at anything properly or take photos.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, I often combine a visit to the Colosseum with the Forum Romanum. During my last visit, in June 2025, I had ordered my tickets in advance and went to the Colosseum first. Even though I also had a ticket for the Forum Romanum, I still had to wait in a long line there. In summer, it can also get very hot at the Forum Romanum, so it\u2019s wise to bring enough water.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A useful tip:<\/strong> in the square between the Colosseum and the Forum Romanum, there are water fountains where you can refill your water bottle for free with still or sparkling water. You can also find drinking fountains within the Forum Romanum itself. It\u2019s also good to apply sunscreen and wear a cap or hat, as there is little shade. I\u2019ve personally gotten quite badly sunburned here before.<\/p>\n<p>Whether a visit to the Colosseum is worth it for you depends on your interests and what you want to see. Personally, I find it absolutely worth it: it gives an impressive picture of Roman history, and you really feel something of the atmosphere of the past here. But if you don\u2019t like large crowds or aren\u2019t very interested in history, it may be that visiting the inside suits you less. This was once the political and social heart of ancient Rome. During a walk through the Forum, you pass the remains of ancient temples, basilicas, and other important buildings.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"232\" data-end=\"464\">If you\u2019re already here, it\u2019s definitely worth climbing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citiestotravel.com\/en\/visiting-the-palatine-hill-in-rome\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Palatine Hill<\/a> as well. From the top, you have a beautiful view over the Forum Romanum and the surrounding area. It\u2019s also a nice place to look around calmly and take photos.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"466\" data-end=\"717\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Within walking distance is also Circus Maximus, the largest and oldest chariot racing stadium in Rome. In the past, spectacular chariot races were held here.
