When travelling to Rome, I usually land at Fiumicino Airport, also known as Leonardo da Vinci Airport. From this airport, there are several ways to travel to the centre of Rome. You can choose the Leonardo Express, a bus, a private transfer or a taxi.

I almost always take the Leonardo Express to Roma Termini station, Rome’s main railway station. From there, I usually continue by metro to my hotel.

The best transport option for you depends on your budget, arrival time and the location of your accommodation.

The Leonardo Express is a fast way to travel from Fiumicino Airport to the centre of Rome. This direct train takes you to Roma Termini station, the city’s main railway station, in approximately 32 minutes. From there, you can continue to your hotel by metro or another form of public transport.

The train generally departs every 15 minutes. At certain times, the waiting time can increase to 30 minutes. I recommend buying your ticket online in advance. This way, you won’t have to queue at a ticket machine after arriving.

Why I Always Buy My Ticket in Advance

I always buy my ticket for the Leonardo Express in advance. In the past, I often bought my train ticket at the airport. I regularly had to queue at a ticket machine for 15 to 20 minutes. By purchasing your ticket in advance, you can skip this queue and walk straight to the train after arriving.

Seats are not assigned on the Leonardo Express. You board the train and choose an available seat. The train consists of several carriages and generally offers enough seats for passengers. However, at busy times, you may have to look around for an available seat.

Have you just landed at Fiumicino Airport? Follow the signs for the trains. They will lead you to the airport’s railway station, which is located inside the airport building. Then follow the signs to Stazione Fiumicino Aeroporto. This will guide you to the Leonardo Express.

Are you travelling from Rome to the airport? The Leonardo Express usually departs from platform 24 at Roma Termini station. Follow the signs to the platforms inside the station. You can also access the station via the entrance at Via Giolitti 32, which provides access to platform 24. Always check the departure boards shortly before departure to make sure you know which platform your train leaves from.

In addition to the Leonardo Express, you can also travel by bus from Fiumicino Airport to the centre of Rome. Several bus operators run this route. I have had good experiences with SIT Bus Shuttle and Terravision. Both offer a connection to Roma Termini station.

SIT Bus Shuttle

Would you like to travel from Fiumicino Airport to Rome on a budget? Then taking the bus is worth considering. SIT Bus Shuttle operates from the airport to Roma Termini station, with stops along the way, including at the Vatican. You can book your ticket online in advance to plan your journey ahead of time.

Travel time depends on traffic and the service you choose. Allow approximately 50 minutes or longer. Departure times vary throughout the day. Check the current timetable before travelling and choose a departure time that fits your arrival.

Terravision Bus

Another option is the Terravision bus. This operator runs between Fiumicino Airport and Rome, with Roma Termini station as a key arrival point. The bus is an alternative to the train if you prefer a direct bus connection.

Travel time depends on traffic and road conditions. Departure times may also vary from day to day. Therefore, check the current timetable in advance and allow for possible waiting times after arrival.

Would you like to travel comfortably to your hotel or apartment after your flight? With a private transfer, you book a driver in advance who will pick you up at Fiumicino Airport and take you directly to your accommodation. This means you won’t have to work out which public transport to take or where to change after arriving.

A private transfer is similar to booking a taxi in advance. The advantage is that many providers show you the fare beforehand and tell you where your driver will meet you. When booking, check whether the price is fixed and what is included.

A private transfer is generally more expensive than the train or bus, but it can be a comfortable option if you are travelling with several people, have a lot of luggage or want to go straight to your accommodation after a long flight. Therefore, compare the prices and conditions before booking.

Taking a Taxi from Fiumicino to Rome City Centre

Would you like to travel comfortably to your hotel after arriving at Fiumicino Airport? An official taxi is a convenient option. A fixed fare of €55 per taxi applies for journeys from the airport to destinations within Rome’s Aurelian Walls. This fare covers up to four passengers, including luggage.

The journey takes approximately 40 to 50 minutes in normal traffic. The fixed fare also applies at night, on Sundays and on public holidays. You therefore won’t pay extra depending on your arrival time.

What Should You Look Out for When Taking a Taxi?

If you want to take a taxi from the airport, keep the following points in mind.

Check Whether Your Destination Is Within the Aurelian Walls

The fixed fare of €55 applies only to destinations within the Aurelian Walls. Not every hotel described as being in the city centre or historic centre falls within this area. Therefore, check in advance whether the fixed fare applies to your accommodation. If your destination is outside the zone, the fare may be calculated using the taxi meter.

Only Take an Official Taxi

At Fiumicino Airport, follow the signs to the official taxi rank near the arrivals hall. Official taxis are white and can be recognised by the taxi sign on the roof and the Roma Capitale logo on the front door. Do not accept offers from drivers who approach you inside the terminal.

Confirm the Fare Before You Leave

Tell the driver your destination before getting in and ask whether the fixed fare of €55 applies. For example, you can say: Cinquantacinque euro per il centro, giusto? This means: €55 to the city centre, correct? This helps avoid misunderstandings about the price.

Are You Travelling with More Than Four People?

The fixed fare applies to a maximum of four passengers. If you are travelling with five or more people, a surcharge of €5 per additional passenger may apply. Check at the taxi rank whether a suitable taxi is available and what fare applies to your group.

The best transport option for you depends on your budget, arrival time and the location of your hotel. When travelling to Rome, I almost always choose the Leonardo Express. I find it the most convenient way to reach the city centre because the train runs directly to Roma Termini station and you don’t have to worry about traffic.

From Termini station, you can easily continue your journey by metro. Rome’s metro network is easy to navigate and useful for reaching many attractions and hotels. That’s why I usually consider the combination of the Leonardo Express and the metro the best choice for a city trip to Rome.

Would you like to travel as cheaply as possible and don’t mind spending more time on the journey? Then the bus can be a good alternative. Are you travelling with a lot of luggage, with young children, or would you prefer to be taken directly to the door of your accommodation? In that case, a taxi or private transfer may be more comfortable.

Compare the options and choose the one that best suits your travel plans.

With a little preparation, you can travel from Fiumicino Airport to your hotel without unnecessary stress. These practical tips will help you know what to expect and plan your journey more easily.

Buy Your Tickets in Advance Where Possible

Would you like to travel to Rome by Leonardo Express or bus? I recommend arranging your ticket online in advance. This way, you won’t have to work out where to buy a ticket after arriving. However, check the conditions of your ticket, especially if your flight is delayed and you may need to take a different departure.

Allow Enough Time After Arrival

When planning your journey, allow time to get off the plane, collect your luggage and find your way to the station or bus stop. Avoid booking transport too soon after your scheduled landing. If you are taking a taxi or private transfer, check in advance how pick-ups are handled in the event of a delay.

Check How to Get from Termini Station to Your Hotel

If you take the Leonardo Express, you will arrive at Roma Termini station. From there, you can continue by metro or choose another way to reach your accommodation. Check in advance which metro station is closest to your hotel. This way, you will know which route to take as soon as you arrive.

Check the Bus Departure Times

Are you choosing SIT Bus Shuttle or Terravision? Check the current timetable and the location of the boarding point at Fiumicino Airport in advance. Keep in mind that bus travel times depend on traffic. Allow enough time if you have a reservation or appointment after arriving.

Pay Attention to Where You Take a Taxi

Would you like to travel to Rome by taxi? Follow the signs to the official taxi rank at the airport. Do not accept offers from drivers who approach you in the arrivals hall. Before setting off, check whether the fixed fare applies to your destination.

Check the Route to Your Accommodation

Rome has several neighbourhoods, and not every hotel is within walking distance of a metro or railway station. Therefore, check where your accommodation is located and how to get there from your arrival point. If you are travelling with a lot of luggage or arriving late in the evening, direct transport to your hotel may be a more convenient alternative.
