The Tower Bridge is one of the most famous sights in London. During a first city trip to the British capital, you will probably want to see this famous bridge up close. But is it also worth going inside and visiting the Tower Bridge Exhibition?
In this article, I share my experience of visiting the Tower Bridge in London. I will tell you what to expect, what you will see during the visit, and whether the Tower Bridge Exhibition is worth it. I will also give you practical tips, so you can decide for yourself whether a visit to the Tower Bridge fits into your city trip to London.
What is the Tower Bridge in London?
The Tower Bridge is one of the most famous and iconic bridges in London. The bridge crosses the River Thames and was designed by Sir Horace Jones and Sir John Wolfe Barry. Construction began in 1886, and the Tower Bridge was officially opened in 1894.
The bridge is 244 metres long and consists of two distinctive towers. Between the towers is a bascule bridge that can be raised when ships need to sail along the Thames. This is still one of the most striking features of Tower Bridge.
The Tower Bridge is located directly next to the Tower of London. The bridge also gets its name from this location. Thanks to the combination of its unique architecture, its location on the River Thames and its history, Tower Bridge has become one of the most recognisable places in London.
Is a visit to the Tower Bridge worth it?
I have visited London several times over the past fifteen years, and during these visits I have also visited the Tower Bridge several times. Personally, I definitely think a visit to the Tower Bridge is worthwhile, especially if you are visiting London for the first time.
There is a lot to see on and around the Tower Bridge. From the walkways, you have a beautiful view of London’s skyline. You can see, among other things, the Tower of London, The Shard and St. Paul’s Cathedral. For the view alone, I think it is worth seeing the bridge up close.
You can also visit the Tower Bridge from the inside. At the Tower Bridge Exhibition, you can learn more about the history and the technology behind the bridge. Especially if you are interested in historic architecture and Victorian-era engineering, this is a nice addition to your visit.
One of the most unique parts for me was the Glass Walkways. You walk high above the ground on a glass floor while traffic passes underneath you. This gives you a completely different view of the bridge and creates a unique experience. For me, this was therefore one of the highlights of the Tower Bridge Exhibition.
My conclusion
If you are visiting London for the first time, I would definitely add the Tower Bridge to your city trip. The bridge is impressive to see from the outside, and from the walkways you have a beautiful view of London.
Whether you also want to go inside mainly depends on your interests. The Tower Bridge Exhibition is a nice addition if you want to learn more about the history and technology of the bridge. Personally, I especially recommend the Glass Walkways.

Through films and other presentations, you gain more insight into the history of the bridge and how this remarkable structure was built at the end of the 19th century.
The Glass Floors of the Tower Bridge
From the North Tower, you then walk across the high-level walkways towards the South Tower. Along the way, you have a beautiful view of London and the River Thames through the large windows. Part of the route consists of the famous Glass Floors. These glass floors are located about 42 metres above the River Thames and give you a unique view of the traffic and boats below you.
Walking across the Glass Floors is one of the most unique parts of the Tower Bridge Exhibition. You literally walk across a glass floor while traffic passes underneath you. Do you find that exciting or would you rather not walk on the glass? Then you can also use the normal walkway next to the glass floor.
The Engine Room of the Tower Bridge
In the Engine Rooms, you can see the machines that were once used to open the bridge. Here, you can learn more about the technology behind Tower Bridge and how opening the bridge worked.
The route ends at the Engine Rooms. You then leave Tower Bridge and come out again on the south bank of the River Thames.
Tickets for Tower Bridge
If you want to visit the Tower Bridge Exhibition, you need a ticket. It is advisable to book your ticket online in advance, especially if you are visiting London during a busy period.
When booking, you choose a date and time for your visit. This way, you know in advance when you can enter and you can more easily combine your visit to Tower Bridge with other sights in London.
How long you spend at the Tower Bridge depends on what you want to do. Do you only want to walk across the bridge, or do you also want to visit the Tower Bridge Exhibition? For both options, you can allow roughly the following amount of time.
For a visit to the Tower Bridge Exhibition, I would allow around 60 to 90 minutes. This gives you enough time to explore the exhibition, walk across the Glass Floors and visit the historic Engine Rooms.
Do you only want to see the Tower Bridge from the outside and walk across the bridge? Then it takes around 10 to 15 minutes to get from one side of the River Thames to the other. Of course, you will probably spend a little longer taking photos and enjoying the view.
If you also want to see an opening of the Tower Bridge, allow around 15 to 20 minutes. From the riverbank, you can watch the bridge open for ships sailing along the River Thames.
When is the best time to visit the Tower Bridge?
If you want to visit the Tower Bridge Exhibition, I would try to go early in the day. In the morning, it is generally quieter than later in the day, allowing you to explore the exhibition and walkways in a more relaxed way. Especially during busy periods, it can therefore be a good idea to plan your visit early.
Do you only want to see the Tower Bridge from the outside and take photos? Then early morning is a great time. Around sunrise, it is often quiet around the bridge, giving you a good chance to take photos without large groups of people in the background.
I also find early morning one of the most pleasant times to visit the Tower Bridge. The bridge and its surroundings have a completely different atmosphere then compared to later in the day.
What are the opening hours of the Tower Bridge?
The Tower Bridge Exhibition is open daily from 09:30 to 18:00. The last admission is at 17:00.
Please note: these opening hours apply to the Tower Bridge Exhibition and not to the public walkway across the bridge. You can also see the Tower Bridge outside the Exhibition’s opening hours and walk across the River Thames via the walkway. This walkway is free to access.

By Underground
The two Underground stations most commonly used to travel to the Tower Bridge are Tower Hill and London Bridge.
Tower Hill is located on the north side of the River Thames. From the station, it takes about seven minutes to walk to the Tower Bridge. You can get here on the District Line or Circle Line. The route takes you past the Tower of London.
London Bridge is located on the south side of the river. From here, it takes about ten to twelve minutes to walk to the Tower Bridge. This station is served by, among others, the Jubilee Line and Northern Line. Via The Queen’s Walk, you walk along the River Thames for much of the route.
By bus
You can also reach the Tower Bridge by bus. This is a fun option if you want to see more of London along the way. Several bus routes stop near the bridge.
A special way to see the Tower Bridge is by taking bus 78. This bus crosses the bridge, allowing you to experience the Tower Bridge from the bus as well.
By river bus
Another option is the river bus operated by Uber Boat by Thames Clippers. You then travel along the River Thames towards Tower Pier, which is located on the north side of the river, close to the Tower Bridge.
This is especially a fun option if you want to combine your trip to the Tower Bridge with a journey along the River Thames. You can see London from the water along the way and get off close to the bridge.
On foot via The Queen’s Walk
Are you already near the south bank of the River Thames, for example at Tate Modern, Shakespeare’s Globe or The Shard? Then you can also walk to the Tower Bridge.
Via The Queen’s Walk, you walk along the River Thames towards the bridge. This is a beautiful route if you want to combine several sights on the south bank with a visit to the Tower Bridge.
Practical tips for visiting the Tower Bridge
Good preparation will make your visit to the Tower Bridge much easier. With these practical tips, you will know what to keep in mind beforehand.
Book your ticket online in advance
Do you want to visit the Tower Bridge Exhibition? Then it is advisable to book your ticket online in advance. Especially on busy days, popular time slots can fill up quickly. Booking online also gives you a clear idea of the available times and the price of your ticket beforehand.
Don’t bring too much luggage
There are no lockers or cloakrooms at the Tower Bridge. Large suitcases and large backpacks therefore cannot be taken inside. If you are travelling around London with a lot of luggage, keep this in mind before heading to the Tower Bridge.
Bring something warm
It can get quite windy on the high-level walkways of the Tower Bridge. It can also feel cooler along the River Thames than in the streets of London. Even in summer, it is therefore advisable to bring an extra cardigan or light jacket.
Travel with your bank card or phone
For public transport in London, you do not necessarily need an Oyster Card these days. You can also pay contactlessly on the Underground and buses with a suitable bank card or credit card. Paying with your phone via, for example, Apple Pay or Google Wallet is also possible.
