10 Best City Breaks for Solo Travelers

Published on 19 July 2026

Traveling to a city alone is something I would recommend everyone experience at least once. The first time can feel a little intimidating. You are completely on your own and experience a city in a very different way than when traveling with your partner, family, or friends. That sense of freedom is exactly what makes a solo city break so special for many people.

You may be wondering which city is the best destination for a solo city trip and what you should keep in mind before you go. In this blog, I share my favorite destinations, highlight the 10 best solo city breaks, and explain what to consider so you can travel alone with confidence.

Is Traveling to a City Alone Different for Men and Women?

Yes, traveling to a city alone is often experienced differently by men and women. The biggest difference usually comes down to how safe they feel and the precautions they take. Many women are more aware of their surroundings during a solo city trip, plan their routes more carefully, and may sometimes experience unwanted attention. As a result, the journey can feel different for them in certain situations than it does for men.

The way other people respond also often differs. A man traveling alone is frequently seen as adventurous, while a woman traveling alone is more likely to be asked about her safety or advised to be extra cautious.

In practice, many women therefore take additional safety precautions. This may include sharing their live location with family or friends, avoiding quiet streets late at night, or carrying a personal safety alarm. That does not mean a solo city trip is unsafe. On the contrary, many European cities are excellent destinations for solo travelers. However, it is always wise to prepare well in advance and stay aware of your surroundings, whether you are traveling alone as a man or a woman.

Ultimately, a solo city trip is about freedom for everyone. You decide where to go, how to spend your day, and which places you want to discover. With good preparation, both men and women can fully enjoy an unforgettable city break.

What Is a Good City Break to Take Alone?

Not every city is equally suitable for a solo city trip. A good destination is safe, easy to navigate, and simple to explore on foot or by public transport. It also helps if there are plenty of accommodations for solo travelers, such as hostels, boutique hotels, or affordable hotels, as well as enough attractions and activities that you can easily enjoy on your own.

Some cities are less suitable. Think of destinations with unsafe neighborhoods, little atmosphere, or infrastructure that is mainly designed for car traffic. As a result, a solo city break can quickly feel less relaxing.

Over the past fifteen years, I have visited many cities on my own multiple times. Based on those experiences, I have put together a list of the 10 best solo city breaks. These destinations combine a great atmosphere, easy accessibility, and plenty to see and do, making them ideal for anyone planning to travel to a city alone.

The 10 Best Solo City Breaks

1. Amsterdam

Sights in Amsterdam

I live in Eindhoven, about 125 kilometers from Amsterdam, so it was one of the first cities where I traveled alone. Because of that, I know from personal experience how enjoyable Amsterdam is to explore on your own.

Although Amsterdam is certainly not a cheap destination, I still think it is an excellent choice for a solo city break. The city is compact, easy to reach, and most of the main attractions are within walking or cycling distance of each other. There is always something to do, so you never have to worry about getting bored. Whether you visit a museum, stroll through the Jordaan district, take a canal cruise, or relax at a cozy café terrace, Amsterdam is perfect for exploring at your own pace.

Would you like to learn more about visiting Amsterdam? Read my comprehensive travel guide, where I share everything you need to know about the city’s top attractions, the best neighborhoods, the canal cruise I recommend, and practical tips to help you prepare for your solo city trip.

2. London

4-day itinerary for London

London was one of the first cities outside the Netherlands that I visited on my own. Since then, I have returned several times, and it remains one of my favorite destinations for a solo city break. The city has a vibrant atmosphere, is easy to get around by public transport, and offers endless opportunities to explore at your own pace.

When you travel alone, you really notice how much freedom London offers. Stroll through lively neighborhoods such as Soho and Covent Garden, visit one of the many museums, or end the day with a musical in the West End. Going out alone feels completely natural here, and there is always something happening.

Of course, London has much more to offer. That is why I have written a comprehensive travel guide where I show you the best places to shop, the attractions you should not miss, and how to discover the city’s highlights in four days with a practical itinerary. This makes it easy to prepare for your solo city trip.

3. Paris

City trip in Europe, Visiting Paris

Paris is known as the City of Love, but don’t let that stop you from traveling there on your own. In fact, Paris is a fantastic destination for solo travelers. The city is diverse, easy to explore by public transport, and offers more than enough attractions to keep you entertained for days. Admire the Eiffel Tower, wander through the charming streets of Montmartre, or spend a few hours exploring the Louvre.

Because Paris is such a large city, good preparation is important. That is why I have written a comprehensive travel guide where I tell you everything about the city’s top attractions, how to get around Paris easily by metro, the best time to visit, and practical tips for planning your solo city trip.

4. Barcelona

City trip in Europe, Sagrada Familia

Barcelona is a fantastic destination for a solo city break. The city is vibrant, easy to explore by public transport, and combines culture, gastronomy, and beaches in a way that few other European cities can. This makes it easy to fill your days without relying on a travel companion.

As with any major city, it is important to stay alert. Pickpockets are especially common in busy areas such as La Rambla and on the metro. If you go out in the evening, it is wise to take the same precautions you would in any other large European city. However, don’t let that discourage you, as Barcelona feels safe and welcoming for solo travelers in most areas.

During your visit, a walk through Park Güell, a visit to the impressive Sagrada Família, and a relaxing afternoon at the beach should definitely be on your itinerary.

Of course, Barcelona has much more to offer. That is why I have written a comprehensive travel guide where I tell you everything about the city’s top attractions, the best shopping streets, the best time to visit, and practical tips to help you prepare for your solo city trip.

5. Rome

sights in Rome, the Colosseum in Rome

Rome is one of my favorite cities and also a destination I regularly visit on my own. Personally, I think it is one of the best cities for a solo city break. If you are interested in history, impressive architecture, or want to visit Vatican City, Rome is an excellent choice.

In three to four days, you can discover the city’s highlights at your own pace. Visit the Colosseum, admire the impressive squares and fountains, explore Vatican City, and end the day with an Italian dinner on a cozy terrace. Rome is compact, easy to explore on foot, and therefore a great destination for solo travelers.

Since there is so much to see and do in Rome, I have written a comprehensive travel guide. In it, I cover the city’s top attractions, Vatican City, traveling by metro, the best time to visit, how many days you need, and plenty of practical tips to help you prepare for your solo city trip.

6. Milan

Visit Milan – Duomo di Milano

Milan may not be the first city that comes to mind for a solo city break, but that is exactly why it pleasantly surprised me. It is a safe and easy-to-navigate city where culture, fashion, and gastronomy come together perfectly. You can effortlessly set your own pace, whether you are strolling through the historic center or spending an afternoon in one of the city’s stylish shopping streets.

Visit the impressive Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, book a guided tour of the iconic Duomo di Milano in advance, or explore the creative Isola district with its modern street art. End the day with a traditional aperitivo along the canals in the lively Navigli neighborhood.

Milan has much more to offer than many people expect. That is why I have written a comprehensive travel guide where I tell you everything about the city’s top attractions, the best shopping streets, the best time to visit, and practical tips to help you prepare for your solo city trip.

7. Florence

City trip in Europe, Florence in Italy

Florence is a city I enjoy visiting on my own. If you love world famous art, impressive architecture, and a compact historic center, this is a fantastic destination for a solo city break. Nearly all of the city’s highlights are within walking distance of each other, making it easy to explore at your own pace.

Admire the impressive Duomo, visit the world famous Uffizi Gallery, or see Michelangelo’s David at the Galleria dell’Accademia. Between sightseeing, you can wander through the charming streets or relax on a terrace while soaking up the authentic Tuscan atmosphere.

8. Venice

City trip in Europe, City trip to Venice

Venice is a wonderful destination for a solo city break. I have visited it several times over the past fifteen years, both alone and with others, and both experiences have their own charm. However, I believe Venice is especially well suited to exploring on your own. You can set your own pace and spend hours wandering through the narrow streets, across the many bridges, and along the picturesque canals.

The city feels compact, safe, and easy to navigate, with most of the main attractions within walking distance. Visit St. Mark’s Square, take a gondola ride, or explore the quieter streets where most day trippers never go. Those hidden corners are where you truly experience the unique atmosphere that makes Venice so special.

There are several ways to visit Venice. You can choose a day trip or stay for a few days to explore the city at a more relaxed pace. To help you decide, I have written a comprehensive travel guide. In it, I explain the best ways to travel to and around Venice, the attractions you should not miss, the gondola ride I recommend, and practical tips for planning your solo city trip.

9. Athens

Acropolis – The symbol of Athens

Athens may seem like an intimidating city to explore on your own, but in reality, it is a fantastic destination for a solo city break. Traveling alone allows you to experience the city in a completely different way. You have all the time you need to take in its ancient history, wander through its charming neighborhoods, and discover Greek culture at your own pace.

The city combines world famous attractions with a relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere. Athens is also surprisingly compact and affordable, making it easy to visit the main historical highlights on foot. One thing that always stands out to me is how welcoming and helpful the Greek people are. Dining alone feels completely normal here, and it is easy to strike up a conversation with locals or fellow travelers.

The city center also remains lively in the evening. The terraces are full, street musicians create a great atmosphere, and there are still plenty of people out and about. This makes Athens feel comfortable and relaxed for many solo travelers.

10. New York

Empire State Building – New York

Of all the cities I have visited over the past fifteen years, New York remains my absolute favorite. I visit at least twice a year and have experienced the city alone, with my partner, with friends, and with my children. Still, I enjoy New York the most when I travel there on my own. It allows me to set my own pace and spontaneously decide to visit a museum, spend hours walking through Central Park, or explore a neighborhood I have never visited before. After all, New York is so much more than just Times Square.

New York is also an excellent destination for solo travelers. The city is lively day and night, public transportation is widely used, and it is completely normal to visit a restaurant, museum, or Broadway show on your own. As a result, you quickly feel comfortable as a solo traveler.

What Are the Benefits of a Solo City Trip?

A solo city trip gives you a sense of freedom that is difficult to experience when traveling with others. You decide what time to get up, which attractions to visit, where to eat, and how long to stay at each place. You do not have to consider the preferences of a travel companion and can plan each day entirely your own way.

Traveling alone also helps you step outside your comfort zone. You learn to make decisions more quickly, become more independent, and often experience a city more intensely. Simply because you are on your own, you tend to be more aware of your surroundings and notice the small details that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Many people think that a solo city trip means spending the entire day alone, but in reality, that is often not the case. During a walking tour, in a museum, on a café terrace, or in a hostel, it is easy to start conversations with other travelers or local residents. As a result, a solo city trip can be surprisingly social while still giving you the freedom to do exactly what you want.

What Are the Disadvantages of a Solo City Trip?

Although a solo city trip offers many advantages, there are also a few drawbacks to keep in mind. Fortunately, most of them can easily be managed with good preparation.

One of the biggest disadvantages is the cost. Because you are traveling alone, you cannot split hotel rooms, taxis, and other expenses with a travel companion. In popular cities such as New York, you will often pay almost the same price for a hotel room as two people would. Dining out can also be more expensive because you cannot share dishes or set menus.

In addition, you have to organize everything yourself. You are responsible for booking your transportation, accommodation, and activities. If something goes wrong during your trip, you will also have to deal with it yourself. This requires a bit more preparation, but it also gives you the freedom to plan your trip exactly the way you want.

For some people, dining alone takes a little getting used to. Especially during your first solo city trip, it can feel a bit uncomfortable to sit at a table by yourself. In my experience, that feeling usually disappears quickly, and after a few times it feels completely natural.

Another disadvantage is that you cannot immediately share special moments with someone else. Whether it is a stunning view, an impressive attraction, or a funny experience, there is no one beside you enjoying the exact same moment. How you experience this varies greatly from person to person and often depends on your stage of life. Younger travelers sometimes find it disappointing that they cannot look back on shared travel memories later on. As you get older, however, you may find that the desire for complete freedom becomes stronger and that traveling alone feels increasingly natural. There is no right or wrong choice. The most important thing is to choose the style of travel that suits you best.

Which Hotel Is Best for a Solo City Trip?

When booking a hotel for a solo city trip, it is wise to look beyond the price per night. Many hotels offer dedicated single rooms or compact single and micro rooms. These rooms are often much more affordable because you are not paying for extra space that you simply do not need as a solo traveler.

However, availability varies greatly depending on the destination. In cities such as New York, most hotel rooms are designed for at least two guests. You can, of course, book one of these rooms on your own, but in practice you will almost always pay the same rate as two travelers. This often makes a solo trip to New York more expensive than a solo city break in many European cities.

In cities such as Rome, Florence, and Milan, the selection of compact hotel rooms is usually much larger. This makes it easier to find affordable accommodation that better suits the needs of a solo traveler.

My main advice is not to focus solely on the price, but also on the location of the hotel. A centrally located hotel may cost a little more, but you will often save money on taxis and public transportation. In addition, many attractions will be within walking distance, which not only saves money but also makes your city trip much more enjoyable.

Where Should You Eat During a Solo City Trip?

For many people, dining alone is one of the most intimidating parts of a solo city trip. Fortunately, it does not have to be a problem at all. In my experience, you get used to it very quickly, and after a few times you hardly think about it anymore.

Choose a food hall, a restaurant with bar seating, a casual café, or a hotel restaurant whenever possible. These are places where many people dine alone, and the atmosphere is usually relaxed. They also make it easier to strike up a conversation with locals or fellow travelers.

Lunch is another great opportunity to enjoy the local cuisine on your own. Many restaurants are quieter during the day, allowing you to enjoy your meal while taking in your surroundings. If you prefer something quick, local markets and street food are also excellent options.

Most importantly, do not let dining alone stop you from walking into a restaurant. In popular cities, eating alone is completely normal. See it as part of the experience and enjoy the freedom to choose exactly where and when you want to eat.

Traveling to a City Alone: My Experiences

Over the past few years, I have taken many city trips, both with others and on my own. At first, I found the idea of traveling alone for the first time quite intimidating. You naturally wonder what it will be like to explore a city by yourself, dine alone, and organize everything on your own. Looking back, that mental barrier was much bigger than the reality.

After a few solo city trips, I discovered how much freedom this way of traveling offers. I set my own pace and can spontaneously decide to visit a museum, spend hours wandering through unfamiliar streets and neighborhoods, or explore a place that is not even mentioned in the guidebooks. Those are often the moments when you truly get to know a city.

When you travel with others, you always take each other into account, even without realizing it. Everyone has different interests, and of course there is nothing wrong with that. One person may want to spend hours in a museum, while another prefers shopping or relaxing on a café terrace. Sometimes someone even joins you because you want to see something, even though they are not particularly interested in it themselves. When you travel alone, you do not have to think about any of that, and you can experience a city entirely on your own terms.

That does not mean I always prefer traveling alone. On the contrary, I regularly enjoy city breaks with others as well. But when I really want to explore a city in depth, discover new neighborhoods, and make the most of my trip, I prefer to travel on a solo city break.

Tips for a Solo City Trip

A solo city trip does not have to be complicated at all. With good preparation, you will often get more out of your trip and avoid unnecessary surprises. Below are some practical tips that I have learned during my own city breaks and that can make your first or next solo city trip much easier.

1. Book a Hotel in a Central Location

A hotel in the city center is often a little more expensive, but it saves you both time and transportation costs. It also makes it easy to walk back to your hotel after a long day of sightseeing.

2. Don’t Plan Every Minute of Your Day

It is helpful to have a general itinerary, but leave room for spontaneous discoveries. The unexpected streets, cafés, and squares are often what make a solo city trip so memorable.

3. Download Offline Maps

With offline maps, you can easily find your way even without an internet connection. This is especially useful if you do not have mobile data or temporarily lose your signal.

4. Book Popular Attractions in Advance

For famous attractions such as the Eiffel Tower, the Colosseum, or the Sagrada Família, it is wise to reserve your tickets in advance. This helps you avoid long lines and guarantees your entry.

5. Bring a Power Bank

You will probably use your smartphone for navigation, photos, tickets, and payments. A fully charged power bank ensures you do not run out of battery during the day.

6. Keep Digital Copies of Important Documents

Save digital copies of your passport, travel insurance documents, and reservations. If you lose anything, you will always have a backup available.

7. Let Someone Know Where You Are

Tell a family member or friend where you are staying and, if you like, share your travel itinerary. This provides extra peace of mind, especially if it is your first time traveling alone.

8. Don’t Be Afraid to Explore Beyond the Main Tourist Areas

The famous attractions are certainly worth visiting, but do not forget to explore a lesser known neighborhood or a local park. Those places often reveal the true character of a city.

9. Trust Your Instincts

If a street, situation, or neighborhood does not feel right, simply turn around or choose a different route. A solo city trip is about enjoying yourself, not taking unnecessary risks.
