Cheap city trips in Europe: useful tips and information
Published on 25 July 2026
Cheap city trips in Europe are often associated with destinations in Eastern Europe, such as Tirana, Budapest, Prague, and Kraków. However, with good planning and a few smart budget tips, you can also travel affordably to popular cities like Rome, London, and Paris.
Over the past fifteen years, I have visited many cities across Europe several times. During these trips, I have not only explored the top attractions but also looked for ways to keep a city break affordable. In this blog, I share my experiences, practical tips, and useful information to help you plan a cheap city trip in Europe.
What are the best cheap city trips in Europe?
Which cheap city trip in Europe is the most enjoyable for you depends on your interests and your budget. What one person considers an affordable and fun destination may be less interesting or more expensive for someone else. That is why it is a good idea to first decide which city you want to visit and what budget you have.
Then look for practical budget tips for that destination. You will often find that much more is possible than you initially expect. Below, I have listed my experiences, useful budget tips, and practical information for six popular cities. This way, you can also visit popular destinations without spending a fortune.
1. Athene
Athens is one of the most budget-friendly capitals in Europe. The city is suitable for couples, groups of friends, and solo travelers. Thanks to its pleasant climate, you can enjoy a city trip to Athens almost all year round. Keep in mind, however, that temperatures can rise significantly in July and August.
Travel to Athens on a budget
You can travel to Athens on a budget, especially if you book outside the peak season. Flight tickets are often cheaper in spring and autumn than during the summer holidays. You can usually save money by flying on weekdays and booking your flight several months in advance. There are also multiple direct flights to Athens from various European countries, making it easier to find an affordable fare.
Yes, you can easily find affordable accommodation in Athens. The city is one of the most budget-friendly capitals in Europe when it comes to places to stay. Budget hotels are often available from around €15 per night, while comfortable three-star hotels typically cost between €69 and €134 per night, depending on the season.
Hotel prices vary considerably throughout the year. Rates are usually at their lowest during the winter months, from November to February. In spring and early autumn, when many travelers visit the city, you can expect to pay more on average for a hotel room.
Cheap food and drinks in Athens
Athens is also an excellent choice for a cheap city trip when it comes to food and drinks. Prices are generally lower than in the Netherlands, while the quality of the food is often high. In traditional tavernas and local restaurants, you can enjoy a hearty lunch or dinner for a reasonable price. With a daily budget of around €15 to €25, you can enjoy several good meals and drinks.
Free and cheap attractions in Athens
Athens is an ideal destination if you want to see a lot without spending much money. Several well-known attractions are free to visit or cost very little.
Take a walk through the charming neighborhoods of Plaka, Anafiotika, and Monastiraki, where you can enjoy narrow streets, lively squares, and historic buildings. The changing of the guard at the Greek Parliament on Syntagma Square is also free to watch and well worth seeing.
For one of the best views of the city, climb Lycabettus Hill. The walk to the top takes about forty minutes, and along the way you will enjoy increasingly beautiful views over Athens. Once at the top, you will be rewarded with a panoramic view of the city and the Acropolis. The funicular is a convenient option, but if you want to save money, you can easily walk up the hill.
If you also want to visit the Acropolis and other archaeological sites, you can save money by planning your visit carefully. During the low season, from November 1 to March 31, the Acropolis and several other archaeological sites are free to visit on the first Sunday of every month. Admission is also free for everyone on April 18 and May 18.
Are you visiting Athens during the high season and are you over 25 years old? Then the €36 combination ticket is often the best value. It gives you access for three days to the Acropolis and five other famous archaeological sites, including the Ancient Agora, the Roman Agora, and the Temple of Olympian Zeus. This is cheaper than buying separate admission tickets.
Rome may not be the first city that comes to mind for a cheap city trip, but with the right preparation, you can save a surprising amount of money. A realistic budget is around €60 to €80 per person per day, excluding flights. Although Rome is one of the most visited cities in Europe, you can significantly reduce your expenses on transport, accommodation, food, and even many of its famous sights.
Travel to Rome on a budget
You can fly to Rome affordably, especially if you choose a low-cost airline and book your flight well in advance. There are direct flights from the Netherlands departing from both Eindhoven Airport and Schiphol Airport. I usually fly from Eindhoven Airport. Since I live nearby, it is not only more convenient for me, but the flights are often cheaper than departing from Schiphol.
There are also several low-cost airlines flying daily to Rome from Germany and the United Kingdom. As a result, you can often find great deals, especially if you travel outside the peak season.
From both Fiumicino Airport and Ciampino Airport, you can easily travel to Roma Termini by regional train or shuttle bus. This is much cheaper than taking a taxi. I always take the train to Roma Termini and continue to my hotel by metro. It is not only affordable but usually faster as well.
Affordable accommodation in Rome is definitely possible, as long as you choose the right neighborhood and avoid staying in the heart of the historic center. Hotels in areas just outside the Centro Storico are often much cheaper, while the metro takes you to the city’s main attractions in just a few minutes.
When booking a hotel, I always pay close attention to its location. Staying close to a metro station not only saves money but also a lot of travel time. I also usually choose a hotel that includes breakfast. This helps save money on food every day, allowing you to head straight out to explore the city after breakfast.
Cheap food and drinks in Rome
You can also save money on food and drinks in Rome by making a few smart choices. Drink your coffee or soft drink at the bar instead of sitting at a table. Table service on a terrace often comes with an extra charge.
It is also a good idea to bring a reusable water bottle. Throughout the city, you will find the famous nasoni, historic drinking fountains that provide free fresh drinking water. There are also several refill points near popular attractions such as the Colosseum and the Forum Romanum. I always bring a small bottle of lemonade syrup to add some flavor to the water.
For an affordable meal, it is best to avoid the tourist squares. Walk a few streets further and choose a local bakery, pizzeria, or trattoria. You will usually pay less and often enjoy better food than at the busiest tourist spots.
Free and cheap attractions in Rome
Rome is an ideal destination for budget travelers because much of the city can be explored for free. The historic center feels like an open-air museum, where you will come across many impressive sights simply by walking around.
St. Peter’s Basilica, the Spanish Steps,Villa Borghese, and many historic churches are free to visit. You can also admire the Trevi Fountain without paying an entrance fee. Since 2026, you only have to pay a small admission fee if you want to enter the enclosed area directly at the fountain, for example to throw a coin into the water.
The Colosseum and the Roman Forum are also impressive to see from the outside. If you want to visit these attractions, a combination ticket is often cheaper than buying separate admission tickets. If you plan to visit several attractions and use public transportation, the Omnia Vatican and Rome Pass can be a good option. This pass gives you access to several famous attractions and includes free public transportation.
Whether Barcelona is a cheap city trip for you mainly depends on what you want to do during your visit. If you want to admire Gaudí’s impressive architecture, stroll through charming neighborhoods, relax on the beach, and enjoy the city’s lively atmosphere, a city trip to Barcelona does not have to be expensive. Although Barcelona is a popular global city, smart choices can make a big difference in how much you end up spending.
Travel to Barcelona on a budget
You can travel to Barcelona affordably from many countries across Europe. For most travelers, flying is the cheapest and fastest option. Low-cost airlines regularly offer great deals, especially if you book well in advance and travel outside the peak season.
You can also reach Barcelona by train or bus. The high-speed train is comfortable and a more sustainable alternative, but it is often more expensive than flying. If you travel by bus, for example with FlixBus, the journey is usually cheaper, although it takes considerably longer from the Netherlands, Germany, or the United Kingdom.
I usually fly from Eindhoven Airport because it is often the most affordable option for me. I have also driven to Barcelona a few times, but I would not personally do it again anytime soon. Traffic is heavy, parking is expensive, and it is often difficult to find a parking space in the city center.
Affordable accommodation in Barcelona is definitely possible, as long as you do not insist on staying in the heart of the historic center. Hostels and simple guesthouses are often the cheapest option, although you will usually sleep in a shared dormitory. Personally, that is not my preference, but if your main goal is to travel as cheaply as possible, it can be a great choice.
I usually stay in a hotel just outside the city center. These hotels are often more affordable, and thanks to Barcelona’s excellent public transportation, you can still reach the city’s main attractions quickly. This way, you save money on accommodation without adding much extra travel time.
Cheap food and drinks in Barcelona
You can also save a lot of money on food in Barcelona. Avoid the restaurants along Las Ramblas and instead look for smaller restaurants in neighborhoods such as Gràcia, Poble Sec, and Sant Antoni. Prices are usually lower there, and you will often be dining alongside local residents.
When I am in Barcelona, I often choose the Menú del Día for lunch. This is a complete meal that includes a starter, main course, and dessert, often served with bread and a drink. Many local restaurants offer it on weekdays at an attractive price. In my opinion, it is one of the best budget tips for Barcelona.
Free and cheap attractions in Barcelona
Barcelona offers a surprising number of attractions that you can enjoy for free. Simply walking through the city shows why Barcelona is such a popular destination.
The exterior of the Sagrada Família, Casa Batlló, and Casa Milà can all be admired free of charge. A walk along the Barceloneta promenade or a visit to the beach also costs nothing. In addition, the neighborhoods of Barri Gòtic, El Born, and the waterfront promenade are perfect for exploring at your own pace.
If you also want to visit museums, plan your trip carefully. On the first Sunday of every month, several museums, including the Picasso Museum, Palau Güell, and Castell de Montjuïc, offer free admission. Advance online reservations are usually required for these free time slots.
If you plan to visit several paid attractions and use public transportation frequently, the Barcelona Card can be a worthwhile investment. The card gives you access to several museums and includes free public transportation. Depending on what you want to visit, it can be cheaper than buying individual tickets.
Paris is known as an expensive city, but with the right preparation, a city trip does not have to be unaffordable. Especially if you travel in January or February, you can save a significant amount of money. During these months, hotel prices are often lower, and the city’s most popular attractions are much less crowded.
Paris is also an ideal city to explore on foot. Many famous landmarks are within walking distance of each other, and along the way you will pass historic buildings, charming squares, and picturesque streets. You do not even have to spend money to enjoy some of the city’s best views. The rooftop terrace of Galeries Lafayette and the steps of Sacré-Cœur in Montmartre both offer stunning panoramic views of Paris free of charge.
Travel to Paris on a budget
You can travel to Paris affordably from the Netherlands, Germany, and the United Kingdom in several ways. If you are traveling from the Netherlands or Germany, the train and the bus are often cheaper than flying. Bus companies regularly offer attractive deals, while the train provides a comfortable and fast journey to the center of Paris, especially if you book well in advance.
For travelers from other parts of Europe, flying may be the most affordable option. The cheapest choice mainly depends on where you are departing from and when you book.
I usually choose the train. It takes you directly to the center of Paris, and you do not have to pay for additional transportation from the airport.
Affordable accommodation in Paris
Affordable accommodation in Paris is definitely possible, as long as you do not insist on staying near the city’s most famous attractions. Hotels around the Eiffel Tower or the Louvre are among the most expensive in the city.
I usually choose a hotel in the outer arrondissements or just outside the Périphérique. Neighborhoods such as Montmartre, Clignancourt, Bercy, and Nation often offer better value for money and have excellent metro connections.
Places just outside Paris, such as Saint-Ouen, Pantin, and Montrouge, are also great options. Thanks to the fast metro connections, you can often reach the city center within twenty minutes while paying considerably less for a hotel room.
Cheap food and drinks in Paris
You can also enjoy surprisingly good and affordable food in Paris if you avoid the tourist restaurants. I like to eat at a Bouillon. These traditional Parisian restaurants serve classic French dishes at reasonable prices. You can often enjoy a generous lunch or dinner for a fraction of what you would pay in the tourist areas.
For breakfast or a quick lunch, I usually visit a local bakery. Instead of paying for an expensive breakfast at a café, I prefer to buy a freshly baked croissant or a filled baguette. It is not only cheaper but also a great way to experience French food culture.
Free and cheap attractions in Paris
Although Paris is known as an expensive destination, you can visit many famous attractions free of charge. Notre-Dame, Sacré-Cœur, and the city’s beautiful parks are all free to enter. A walk along the Seine or through charming neighborhoods such as Le Marais and Montmartre also costs nothing and is, in my opinion, one of the best ways to discover the city.
Are you a resident of an EU country and under the age of 26? If so, you can enjoy free admission to many national museums and monuments. This includes the Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay, and several other famous attractions.
5. London
Although London is known as an expensive city, a budget-friendly city trip is certainly possible. By planning carefully and taking advantage of the many free attractions, you can keep your expenses surprisingly low. You can save a considerable amount on transportation, accommodation, and food without compromising your overall experience.
Travel to London on a budget
You can travel to London affordably from various European countries. Flight tickets are often competitively priced, but I personally prefer traveling by train.
Although the train journey takes a little longer than flying, it brings you directly to the center of London. This means you do not have to spend extra time or money traveling from one of the airports to your hotel. You can also usually take more luggage, and the journey is much more comfortable.
You can also travel cheaply to London by FlixBus from the Netherlands and Germany. The bus is usually the most affordable option, but it takes considerably longer than the train. While the Eurostar gets you to London in about four hours, the bus journey usually takes between ten and fourteen hours. If you are traveling from Germany, the journey will take even longer.
If you choose the bus because it is the cheapest option, consider taking a night bus. You can sleep during the journey, save the cost of a hotel night, and often arrive in London early in the morning.
Affordable accommodation in London
Affordable accommodation in London is definitely possible, as long as you are flexible about your hotel’s location. Hotels in Zones 2 and 3 are often cheaper than those in the city center, while the Underground usually gets you to the main attractions within twenty minutes. Neighborhoods such as Stratford, Hackney, Brixton, and Peckham are popular choices.
I usually book a hotel that includes breakfast and make sure there is an Underground station within walking distance. Although my hotel is often located in Zone 1, making it slightly more expensive, I actually save money in the end. I need to use public transportation much less, can walk to many attractions, and spend less time traveling. As a result, I get more out of my city trip and can still enjoy walking around London in the evening.
Cheap food and drinks in London
You can also eat well in London without spending a fortune if you avoid the tourist restaurants. The city offers a huge variety of international cuisines, food halls, and affordable restaurant chains where you can enjoy good meals at reasonable prices.
I enjoy eating at Seven Dials Market in Covent Garden. This indoor food hall features dozens of different food stalls, so there is something for everyone. Most dishes are also surprisingly affordable.
For a quick lunch, I often choose a Meal Deal from supermarkets such as Tesco, Sainsbury’s, or Boots. For a fixed price, you get a sandwich, wrap, or salad, a snack, and a drink. It is one of the easiest ways to save money on food during a city trip.
Free and cheap attractions in London
London is an excellent destination for budget travelers because many of its most famous attractions are completely free to visit. You can explore the British Museum, the Natural History Museum, and the National Gallery without paying an entrance fee. These three museums alone can easily fill an entire day of sightseeing without costing you anything.
If you want to enjoy spectacular views of London, you do not necessarily have to buy a ticket for the London Eye or The Shard. The Sky Garden offers stunning panoramic views of the city and is free to visit. However, you do need to reserve a time slot online in advance.
Primrose Hill is another great option. From this hill on the edge of Regent’s Park, you can enjoy beautiful views of London’s skyline, especially at sunset.
If you plan to visit several paid attractions, such as the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, or the London Eye, the London Pass may be a worthwhile option. Depending on your itinerary, it can be more cost-effective than buying individual admission tickets.
A cheap city trip is about more than just finding an affordable flight or a budget hotel. With good planning, you can often save tens or even hundreds of euros without sacrificing comfort or missing out on the main attractions. These are the tips I always use when planning a city trip.
1. Set your total travel budget in advance
Do not just look at the price of your flight. Also consider the cost of your hotel, transportation, food, drinks, entrance tickets, and any city passes. A cheap flight can end up costing more than a slightly more expensive flight to a destination where hotels and restaurants are much more affordable. Setting a total budget in advance helps you avoid surprises during your trip.
2. Compare different travel options
The cheapest way to travel is not always the most cost-effective. A bus journey may seem attractive because of its low price, but the travel time is much longer. As a result, you may need an extra hotel night or spend more money on food and drinks along the way. Always compare flying, traveling by train, and taking the bus. Sometimes spending a little more on transportation saves you money overall and gives you more time to enjoy your city trip.
3. Travel with carry-on luggage whenever possible
For a city trip of just a few days, a large suitcase is usually unnecessary. Many airlines charge extra for checked baggage. By traveling with only carry-on luggage, you not only save money but also avoid waiting at the baggage carousel. This saves time and makes your journey much easier.
4. Decide what you want to see in advance
Do not choose your hotel based on price alone. A cheap hotel can end up costing more if you spend a lot of time and money on public transportation every day. Decide which attractions you want to visit before booking and choose a hotel in a convenient location. Sometimes a slightly more expensive hotel is actually the better value because you can walk to many attractions or only need a short metro ride. This not only saves money but also helps you make the most of your city trip.
5. Always bring a reusable water bottle
Wherever I travel, I always carry a reusable water bottle in my backpack. In many tourist cities, you can easily pay several euros for a bottle of water. By refilling your bottle throughout the day, you save money every day. Many European cities also have free drinking water fountains where you can refill your bottle.
6. Book a hotel with breakfast included
Whenever I book a hotel, I try to choose one that includes breakfast. It may cost a little more, but you start the day with a good breakfast and do not have to look for a café or restaurant first thing in the morning. You will often not need another meal until later in the day, which can actually reduce your daily expenses.
7. Plan your days in advance
Before you travel, check which attractions are close to each other and organize your itinerary accordingly. This helps you avoid unnecessary trips on the metro or bus. A well-planned itinerary not only saves money on transportation but also gives you more time to explore the city.
8. Check free admission days and opening hours
Many museums and monuments offer free admission on certain days or discounted evening entry. Check this before you travel. By planning your visit carefully, you can explore several popular attractions without paying extra.
9. Always pay in the local currency
If you are visiting a country that does not use the euro, such as the United Kingdom, always choose to pay in the local currency when using your debit or credit card instead of selecting euros. Your own bank’s exchange rate is usually better than the rate offered by the payment terminal. This helps you save money on every purchase, leaving you with more to spend on enjoyable activities during your city trip.
Which cheap city trip suits you best?
The best cheap city trip for you mainly depends on your budget and what you want to experience during your trip. Some cities are known for their low prices, while others stand out because of their many free attractions or excellent accessibility. Below is a helpful overview.
Choose Athens if you want the cheapest possible city trip
Athens is one of the most affordable city trip destinations in Europe. You will find budget-friendly hotels, inexpensive restaurants, and many impressive attractions. Thanks to its low prices, Athens is an excellent choice if you want to see a lot without spending a large amount of money.
Choose Rome if you want to combine culture and history
Rome is ideal for lovers of history, charming squares, and impressive monuments. By making smart choices regarding transportation, accommodation, and restaurants, you can keep your expenses surprisingly low. Many of the city’s famous landmarks can also be admired from the outside free of charge.
Choose Barcelona if you want to combine the city with the beach
Would you like to combine sightseeing with a relaxing day at the beach? Then Barcelona is an excellent destination. The city offers many free attractions, charming neighborhoods, and a long waterfront promenade where you can walk for hours without spending any money.
Choose Paris if you are traveling outside the peak season
Paris has a reputation for being expensive, but you can save a significant amount on hotels, especially in January and February. You can also visit many famous attractions free of charge, making Paris a surprisingly affordable city trip destination.
Choose London if you enjoy free museums
London may not be the cheapest destination in Europe, but the city offers a large number of free museums, parks, and viewpoints. With good planning, you can also enjoy an affordable city trip here.
My advice
There is no single city trip that is the best choice for everyone. Do not focus only on the price of your flight or hotel. Instead, consider the total cost of your trip, including transportation, accommodation, food, drinks, and the attractions you want to visit. This way, you can choose the destination that best matches both your budget and your travel preferences.
Frequently asked questions about cheap city trips in Europe
What is the cheapest city trip in Europe?
That depends on when you travel and how you plan your city trip. In general, cities such as Athens are among the most affordable destinations in Europe. You can also save a surprising amount of money in cities like Rome, Barcelona, Paris, and London by choosing affordable transportation, a well-located hotel, and free attractions.
When is the cheapest time to book a city trip?
The lowest prices are usually available outside the peak season. January, February, and November are often the most affordable months for many European cities. It also helps to book your flight or train journey several months in advance. This usually gives you more options and access to lower fares.
How much does a cheap city trip cost on average?
That depends on the destination and the length of your trip. On average, a three-day city trip costs between €250 and €600 per person. This includes transportation, accommodation, food, and a few attractions. By traveling outside the peak season and planning your trip carefully, you can often reduce these costs even further.
Is a city card always worth it?
No, a city card is only worth it if you plan to visit several paid attractions and use public transportation regularly. If you mainly visit free attractions or prefer exploring the city on foot, buying individual admission tickets is often the cheaper option.
What is cheaper: flying, the train, or the bus?
That depends on the destination. For some cities, flying is the cheapest option, while for others, traveling by train or bus is more affordable. Do not just compare the ticket price. Also consider additional costs such as baggage fees, transportation from the airport, and the total travel time. The cheapest option on paper is not always the most cost-effective choice.
How can you save money on food and drinks during a city trip?
Choose restaurants outside the tourist areas and eat where the locals eat. Booking a hotel with breakfast included can also help reduce your daily expenses. Bringing a reusable water bottle is another simple way to save money every day.
Is a cheap city trip less enjoyable?
Not at all. Many of the best experiences during a city trip are completely free. Think of walking through historic neighborhoods, enjoying scenic viewpoints, relaxing in city parks, or visiting free museums. With good planning, you can experience a lot without spending a large amount of money.
What is the ideal length for a cheap city trip?
For most European cities, a stay of three to four days is ideal. It gives you enough time to visit the main attractions, experience the local atmosphere, and explore the city at a relaxed pace without letting your travel costs increase unnecessarily.

Affordable accommodation in Barcelona
4. Paris

Practical tips for cheap city trips in Europe
