The city has famous sights such as the Sagrada Família and Parc Güell, but it is especially the different neighborhoods and street life that make Barcelona interesting to explore.
But is Barcelona really a nice city for a city trip? Of course, that depends on what you are looking for. Do you want to visit lots of sights, enjoy good food, go shopping, walk through atmospheric neighborhoods or even spend a day at the beach? In Barcelona, you can do it all.
I have been visiting Barcelona for several years and have got to know the city in different ways. In this article, I will tell you why I think Barcelona is a great destination, how many days you need and what you should definitely not miss during a city trip to Barcelona. I will also give you practical tips about traveling to the city, public transport, safety and shopping.
Is Barcelona Worth Visiting? My Experience
Yes, Barcelona is definitely worth visiting. The city has a unique combination of culture, impressive architecture, a lively city atmosphere and beaches along the Mediterranean Sea. For me, it is precisely this combination that makes Barcelona different from many other European cities.
I have visited Barcelona several times over the past 15 years. I like to combine a visit to the city with a day at the beach and good food. In the many restaurants and cafés, you can discover Catalan cuisine and dishes such as tapas and fresh seafood. La Boqueria market on La Rambla is one of my favorite places in the city to grab something to eat. At the many tapas bars, you can sit down at the bar and try different fresh dishes.
However, Barcelona is not the ideal destination for everyone. If you are not particularly interested in unique architecture, Mediterranean life or the atmosphere around the Mediterranean Sea, and you mainly visit a city for world-famous art, there are other European cities that may suit you better.
Barcelona has interesting museums and cultural attractions, but when it comes to major art collections and theaters, I find London and Paris stronger. You also need to take the crowds into account. Barcelona is a relatively compact city, and popular places can get very busy, especially during the high season.
For me, a city trip to Barcelona is a great change from other European cities. The combination of the city, beach, terraces, food and relaxed atmosphere often makes me feel as though I am truly on vacation for a while.
My conclusion is therefore clear: Barcelona is definitely worth visiting if you enjoy the city’s architecture, good food, the beach and a lively city. If you are mainly looking for major museums with world-famous art or a wide range of theater and musicals, London or Paris is probably a better choice.
How Many Days Do You Need for a City Trip to Barcelona?
If you are planning a city trip to Barcelona, I would recommend setting aside at least four to five days. Not all the sights are within walking distance of each other, and you can quickly spend quite a bit of time traveling around the city. Besides, during your city trip you don’t want to rush from one attraction to another.
With four or five days, you have enough time to visit the main sights, explore different neighborhoods and enjoy the city at a relaxed pace. You can also spend part of a day or a full day at the beach and make time for shopping in the different shopping areas.
During my first visits, I usually stayed in Barcelona for five days. Nowadays, I usually stay for three to four days. I no longer need to go inside every attraction and I know the city better, which means I can see the things I want to see in less time.
If you are visiting Barcelona for the first time, I would recommend taking a little more time. You will probably want to see the famous Gaudí sights from the inside as well, and it is also nice to have some time to walk around the city without a fixed itinerary.
My advice is therefore to plan at least four days for your first city trip to Barcelona. Five days gives you more time to explore the city at a relaxed pace and also leaves room for the beach, shopping or a long lunch on a terrace.
What should you definitely see in Barcelona?
Besides its beaches and delicious food, Barcelona is particularly famous for the unique architecture of Antoni Gaudí. During a first visit to the city, there are five works by this Catalan architect that, in my opinion, are definitely worth visiting.
Sagrada Família
The Sagrada Família is one of Antoni Gaudí’s most famous works and, in my opinion, a sight you should not miss during your first city trip to Barcelona. The basilica is already impressive from the outside, but I find the interior particularly special.
I visit the Sagrada Família regularly. I especially love seeing the colorful light coming through the stained-glass windows. The pillars inside the basilica are designed to resemble trees with branches. This gives the interior a very different feeling from that of a traditional church.
The towers are also well worth visiting, in my opinion. You can climb some of the towers, and from there you have a beautiful view over Barcelona. For me, the interior of the basilica and the view from the towers are the two most special parts of a visit.
Construction of the Sagrada Família began as early as 1882, and the basilica is still not completely finished. This makes a visit even more special, because you are literally visiting a building that is still being worked on.

Parc Güell is one of the most unique places in Barcelona and a great introduction to the distinctive style of Antoni Gaudí. The park is located in the northeast of the city and combines colorful mosaics, unusual buildings and nature. This combination is precisely what makes it different from many other attractions in Barcelona.
The park was originally intended to become an exclusive residential area, but the plan never got off the ground. Eventually, the area was taken over by the city of Barcelona and opened to visitors. Parc Güell has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984.
Personally, I find the famous staircase with the mosaic salamander, El Drac, one of the most beautiful spots in the park. The salamander is covered with hundreds of colorful pieces of mosaic, making it stand out immediately. The staircase and the buildings around it show very well how playfully Gaudí worked with shapes, colors and nature.
If you are visiting Barcelona for the first time, I would definitely recommend visiting Parc Güell. It is not only a place to admire unique architecture, but also a great place to take a walk and enjoy the views over Barcelona.

You can also see much of Gaudí’s distinctive design style inside the building. You can visit several rooms, including the Gaudí Dome and Cube. However, the rooftop terrace is one of my favorite parts of Casa Batlló. From the roof, you have a beautiful view of Barcelona’s skyline and the mountains surrounding the city.
If you are visiting Barcelona for the first time and want to discover Gaudí’s architecture, I definitely think Casa Batlló is worth visiting. The façade alone makes the building special, but the interior and the view from the rooftop terrace really complete the experience.
Casa Milà, better known as La Pedrera, is one of Antoni Gaudí’s most famous works. The building is located on Passeig de Gràcia and immediately stands out because of its wavy façade and unusual shapes. Gaudí designed Casa Milà between 1906 and 1912 and gave the building a look that you won’t find anywhere else in Barcelona.
During a visit, you can explore different parts of Casa Milà. You can visit the rooftop terrace, the attics, the courtyards and several furnished rooms. I especially find the apartment on the fourth floor one of the most interesting parts of the building. Here, you get an idea of what an apartment belonging to a wealthy family looked like at the beginning of the twentieth century. The furniture, floors and other details make the visit even more interesting.
The rooftop terrace is also one of my favorite places in Casa Milà. The unique chimneys and other structures on the roof are worth seeing in their own right, but I especially enjoy the views over Barcelona. On a clear day, you can see sights including the Sagrada Família and Montjuïc hill.

Casa Vicens has been open to visitors since 2018. During a visit, you can explore several rooms and get a good impression of how Gaudí worked with colors, shapes and patterns. The garden and terrace are also part of the visit.
Personally, I also find the rooftop terrace one of the most beautiful parts of the building. From the roof, you have a lovely view over Gràcia and can see the neighborhood from a completely different perspective.
I would especially recommend Casa Vicens if you want to visit several of Gaudí’s works during your city trip to Barcelona. The building is smaller and less well-known than, for example, the Sagrada Família and Casa Batlló, but that is precisely what makes it an interesting addition to the more famous sights.
Where Is the Best Place to Go Shopping in Barcelona?
Barcelona is also a great city for shopping. You will find major international brands, but for me, it is the smaller shops and boutiques that make shopping interesting. The best shopping areas are spread across different parts of the city, making it easy to combine shopping with exploring Barcelona.
One of the best-known shopping streets is Passeig de Gràcia. Here you will mainly find larger and more luxurious brands. The street is also interesting because of the unique buildings by Antoni Gaudí, including Casa Batlló and Casa Milà. You can therefore easily combine a visit to these attractions with a few hours of shopping.
For more well-known retail chains, you can head towards Portal de l’Àngel. This shopping street is located right in the city center, close to Plaça de Catalunya. It is a busy area, but convenient if you want to find several well-known brands close to each other.
Personally, I find El Born more interesting if you are looking for smaller shops and unique products. The narrow streets of this neighborhood are home to various boutiques, shops selling local brands, and stores offering design and other products that you won’t find everywhere. El Born is also a great neighborhood to simply walk around and explore.
Gràcia is another good choice if you prefer to avoid the major retail chains. In this neighborhood, you will find many smaller shops and local businesses. The atmosphere here is a little more relaxed and less focused on mass tourism. For me, that makes Gràcia a great place to combine shopping with a walk through the neighborhood.
For a completely different atmosphere, you can head to El Raval. This neighborhood has a more alternative and creative character, and you will find vintage shops and smaller stores here. It wouldn’t be the first shopping area I would recommend if you are mainly looking for well-known brands, but it can be interesting if you want to discover something different.
So, the best place to shop in Barcelona mainly depends on what you are looking for. For luxury and well-known brands, I would go to Passeig de Gràcia. If you are mainly looking for smaller shops and local products, I find El Born and Gràcia more enjoyable. Portal de l’Àngel is convenient for well-known retail chains, while El Raval is particularly interesting if you like vintage shops and a more alternative atmosphere.
You can travel to Barcelona in several ways. Depending on where you are coming from, you can choose between flying, taking the train or traveling by bus. Which option suits you best mainly depends on the distance, travel time and how much time you want to spend in Barcelona during your city trip.
For a city trip to Barcelona, I usually choose to fly. The journey is relatively quick, which means you have more time left to explore the city. I find this especially important if you are only spending a few days in Barcelona.
You can also reach Barcelona by train or bus. The advantage is that you get to see more of the landscape along the way and don’t have to fly. However, the journey takes much longer. If you only have four or five days for your city trip, I find this less appealing.
For me, flying is therefore the most practical option for a city trip to Barcelona. If you live relatively close to Barcelona and prefer not to fly, the train or bus can be interesting alternatives.
How to Get Around Barcelona?
If you want to visit many different attractions during your city trip to Barcelona, public transport is a convenient way to get around the city. Barcelona has a well-organized public transport network, including the metro and buses.
I find the metro particularly easy to use. Many important parts of the city are easily accessible, and you can quickly cover longer distances. This is useful if you want to visit several attractions in one day and don’t want to walk everywhere.
However, I would definitely not explore Barcelona using public transport alone. Part of the city’s charm is discovered by walking through its different neighborhoods. That is why I usually combine public transport with walking. This allows you to quickly travel to another part of Barcelona and then explore the area on foot.
For a first city trip to Barcelona, I therefore find the metro the most convenient way to cover longer distances. For shorter distances, I would recommend walking as much as possible. This way, you also get to experience more of the atmosphere and discover the different neighborhoods of Barcelona along the way.
Is Barcelona Safe for Tourists?
Barcelona is generally a perfectly good city for tourists to visit. Just like in other major cities, it is important to keep an eye on your belongings, especially in busy places and on public transport.
One of the main things to be aware of is pickpocketing. In busy tourist areas, on the metro and in other crowded places, pickpockets can strike without you noticing. Therefore, don’t leave your phone or wallet in an open bag or back pocket, and keep a close eye on your valuables.
With a little common sense and awareness, I think you can simply enjoy walking around Barcelona. I would be especially mindful of your surroundings when a place is very crowded. This applies not only to Barcelona, but to almost every popular European destination.
Barcelona is actually a city that is easy to explore on foot. Walk through the different neighborhoods, take your time and enjoy the atmosphere. At the same time, make sure you keep your belongings close to you, and you won’t need to worry unnecessarily during your city trip.

Also, don’t plan too many attractions in one day. Barcelona may look fairly compact on a map, but if you want to visit different parts of the city, you can quickly spend part of the day traveling. Therefore, combine attractions that are close to each other and leave some time to have a relaxed lunch, stop somewhere for a drink or walk through a neighborhood.
Also, make sure to bring good walking shoes. Barcelona is a city that you can explore largely on foot, and when walking, you often discover places you might otherwise miss. A comfortable walk through a neighborhood can sometimes be just as enjoyable as visiting a famous attraction.
If you also want to visit the beach during your city trip, make sure to set aside some time for it. You don’t have to fill every day of your stay with culture and sightseeing. An afternoon by the sea can be a great change of pace and is one of the things that makes Barcelona different from many other European cities for me.
Finally, I would try not to visit only the most famous tourist spots. Also make time to walk through neighborhoods such as El Born, Gràcia or the Gothic Quarter. Sit down at a terrace, take your time over a long lunch and see what is happening around you. These are often the moments when you really get to know Barcelona.

For a completely different atmosphere, you can head to El Raval. This neighborhood has a more alternative and creative character, and you will find vintage shops and smaller stores here. It wouldn’t be the first shopping area I would recommend if you are mainly looking for well-known brands, but it can be interesting if you want to discover something different.
So, the best place to shop in Barcelona mainly depends on what you are looking for. For luxury and well-known brands, I would go to Passeig de Gràcia. If you are mainly looking for smaller shops and local products, I find El Born and Gràcia more enjoyable. Portal de l’Àngel is convenient for well-known retail chains, while El Raval is particularly interesting if you like vintage shops and a more alternative atmosphere.
What is the best way to travel to Barcelona?
You can travel to Barcelona in several ways. Depending on where you are coming from, you can choose between flying, taking the train or traveling by bus. Which option suits you best mainly depends on the distance, travel time and how much time you want to spend in Barcelona during your city trip.
For a city trip to Barcelona, I usually choose to fly. The journey is relatively quick, which means you have more time left to explore the city. I find this especially important if you are only spending a few days in Barcelona.
You can also reach Barcelona by train or bus. The advantage is that you get to see more of the landscape along the way and don’t have to fly. However, the journey takes much longer. If you only have four or five days for your city trip, I find this less appealing.
For me, flying is therefore the most practical option for a city trip to Barcelona. If you live relatively close to Barcelona and prefer not to fly, the train or bus can be interesting alternatives.
How to Get Around Barcelona?
If you want to visit many different attractions during your city trip to Barcelona, public transport is a convenient way to get around the city. Barcelona has a well-organized public transport network, including the metro and buses.
I find the metro particularly easy to use. Many important parts of the city are easily accessible, and you can quickly cover longer distances. This is useful if you want to visit several attractions in one day and don’t want to walk everywhere.
However, I would definitely not explore Barcelona using public transport alone. Part of the city’s charm is discovered by walking through its different neighborhoods. That is why I usually combine public transport with walking. This allows you to quickly travel to another part of Barcelona and then explore the area on foot.
For a first city trip to Barcelona, I therefore find the metro the most convenient way to cover longer distances. For shorter distances, I would recommend walking as much as possible. This way, you also get to experience more of the atmosphere and discover the different neighborhoods of Barcelona along the way.
Is Barcelona Safe for Tourists?
Barcelona is generally a perfectly good city for tourists to visit. Just like in other major cities, it is important to keep an eye on your belongings, especially in busy places and on public transport.
One of the main things to be aware of is pickpocketing. In busy tourist areas, on the metro and in other crowded places, pickpockets can strike without you noticing. Therefore, don’t leave your phone or wallet in an open bag or back pocket, and keep a close eye on your valuables.
With a little common sense and awareness, I think you can simply enjoy walking around Barcelona. I would be especially mindful of your surroundings when a place is very crowded. This applies not only to Barcelona, but to almost every popular European destination.
Barcelona is actually a city that is easy to explore on foot. Walk through the different neighborhoods, take your time and enjoy the atmosphere. At the same time, make sure you keep your belongings close to you, and you won’t need to worry unnecessarily during your city trip.
Tips for a City Trip to Barcelona
With good preparation, you can get more out of your city trip to Barcelona. The city has many famous sights, but you don’t have to plan every minute of your trip. By leaving some free time in your schedule, you have the opportunity to experience the atmosphere of Barcelona as well.
Book popular attractions in advance if you know you definitely want to visit them. Places such as the Sagrada Família and Parc Güell can get busy. By choosing a time slot in advance, you avoid spending a lot of time arranging tickets during your city trip.
Also, don’t plan too many attractions in one day. Barcelona may look fairly compact on a map, but if you want to visit different parts of the city, you can quickly spend part of the day traveling. Therefore, combine attractions that are close to each other and leave some time to have a relaxed lunch, stop somewhere for a drink or walk through a neighborhood.
Also, make sure to bring good walking shoes. Barcelona is a city that you can explore largely on foot, and when walking, you often discover places you might otherwise miss. A comfortable walk through a neighborhood can sometimes be just as enjoyable as visiting a famous attraction.
