Visiting Paris: what can you expect and how do you prepare for your city trip

A city trip to Paris requires preparation. The French capital is large, and it is impossible to see all the sights and famous places in a single visit. The distances between many attractions are considerable, and at well-known places such as museums and monuments it is often crowded on weekends and during school holidays. Without any planning, a lot of time is quickly spent on traveling and waiting, meaning you get less out of your days.

I have visited Paris several times, both for short city trips and for longer stays. Paris is especially suitable for travelers who enjoy visiting museums, want to see famous sights, and like exploring different neighborhoods. It is not a city that lends itself to a rushed visit, but rather a destination where you need to make choices and plan your days consciously. This largely determines how pleasant your stay will be.

On this page you will find an overview that helps with planning a visit to Paris. I discuss sights that are worth seeing, practical matters such as transportation and accommodation, and refer to more in-depth pages with specific tips and experiences. This way, you can decide for yourself how to best plan your days in Paris.

What should you have seen when you visit Paris?

Visiting Paris

Anyone planning a visit to Paris quickly notices that the range of sights is extensive. From world-famous museums and monuments to squares, parks, and neighborhoods, each with its own character. When planning your visit, it mainly comes down to where your interests lie, what you want to see, and how much time you have to explore Paris.

Many travelers start with the well-known highlights, such as museums and iconic buildings in the city center. That is logical, especially on a first visit. At the same time, it pays to look beyond the standard route of the most famous attractions. Some places are close to each other and easy to visit on foot, while others require more time because they are farther apart and you need to travel by metro.

Below you will find an overview of the most visited sights during a trip to Paris. I also refer to more in-depth pages in which I discuss for each place what you can expect, how busy it usually is, and whether a visit is worthwhile. In addition, you will find practical information for each attraction about tickets, opening hours, and the best way to get there. This way, you can decide for yourself which sights fit your travel plans and interests.

Besides the well-known highlights, Paris also has sights that are often a bit less popular. These places are usually located farther from the most famous attractions, and a visit often takes a bit more time. However, that does not make them any less interesting to visit. Especially if you have been to Paris before or want to see more than just the classics, these are valuable additions to your planning.

Is Paris worth visiting?

My first visit to Paris was in 2015. That trip was not well prepared, which meant I ended up seeing less than I had wanted. Because I had not arranged tickets in advance, I spent a lot of time waiting in long lines at popular sights. I also had hardly looked into traveling by metro, so I mostly stayed in the city center. Many places that had been on my list beforehand, I unfortunately did not get to visit.

In the years that followed, I returned to Paris several times, with my most recent visit in April 2025. During these later visits, I approached things differently. I planned my days better, bought tickets in advance, and explored the different neighborhoods of the city more thoroughly. That made a big difference. I discovered Paris in various ways and took more time at each sight. Personally, I therefore think Paris is a city that lends itself well to returning multiple times.

Whether Paris is worth visiting for you also depends on what you are looking for in a city trip and where your interests lie. For travelers who enjoy culture, museums, architecture, and plenty of variety, Paris offers many possibilities.

Day trips and excursions from Paris

Paris itself offers more than enough to fill several days, but if you have some extra time, you can also visit interesting places outside the city. From the city center, you can reach locations relatively quickly by public transport or an organized tour that show a different side of the region. These outings require a bit more planning, but they can be combined well with a city trip.

For many visitors, shopping is part of a city trip to Paris. The city is known for its large department stores, famous shopping streets, and smaller boutiques spread across different neighborhoods. Depending on what you are looking for, it is worth tailoring your visit accordingly.

Practical tips for a visit to Paris

Good preparation makes a visit to Paris much more enjoyable. The city is large, and public transport plays an important role in getting around between sights and neighborhoods. Knowing in advance how the metro system works and which transport passes are useful for tourists saves time and helps avoid unnecessary stress during your stay.

In addition, it is wise to decide in advance how you will travel from the airport to the city center. Depending on where you are staying and the time of arrival, one option may be more practical than another. On this page, I therefore refer to more in-depth information about transportation in Paris.
