La Laguna in Tenerife: Is it worth a visit?

Published on 15 October 2025 Citie to Travel Comments Off

San Cristóbal de La Laguna is a medium-sized town in the north of Tenerife. Usually the city is called La Laguna for short. It is a lively cultural city best known for its narrow streets with many squares, churches and palaces. But is this city worth a visit during your vacation in Tenerife? In this blog I am going to tell you all about it and also give you some tips.

La Laguna in Tenerife

San Cristóbal de La Laguna is a historic city in the north of Tenerife. Founded in 1497, it is best known for its colonial architecture. Once the island’s capital, Santa Cruz has been the capital of Tenerife since 1723. Furthermore, the city’s historic center has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999.

Wat is er zo bijzonder aan La Laguna op Tenerife?

La Laguna

In my opinion, the well-preserved historic center with buildings from the 16th and 17th centuries in Spanish colonial style and with striking facades and wooden balconies, is the most special thing about the city of La Laguna. In addition, San Cristóbal de La Laguna is the first and oldest city in Tenerife, which makes the city extra special to visit.

What is there to do in Los La Laguna?

Besides the beautiful historic center of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, there is much more to see in this beautiful city. Here are my top 5 sights in La Laguna that I think you really must have seen when visiting the city.

1. Cathedral of La Laguna (Catedral de San Cristóbal de La Laguna).

Catedral de San Cristóbal de La Laguna

This beautiful cathedral, which I have visited several times during my trips to Tenerife, is really special to see. It was built in 1902 and has beautiful, classical facades. The tower also offers a wonderful view of the city. In addition, the church has a rich interior with lots of religious art.

2. Historic Center and Calle Obispo Rey Redondo.

A walk through the old center, with its cobblestone streets and colorful houses with wooden balconies, is really a must when visiting the city. Especially do not miss Calle Obispo Rey Redondo, one of the most beautiful streets of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, with its pastel-colored mansions and lively atmosphere. There are also many nice markets and small stores where you can enjoy local products.

3. Museo de Historia y Antropología de Tenerife

Museo de Historia y Antropología de Tenerife

If you are visiting La Laguna for the first time and want to learn more about the history of Tenerife and its original inhabitants, the Guanches, I recommend visiting the Museo de Historia y Antropología de Tenerife. In this museum you will learn more about the history and colonial period of the island. Personally, I am not a big museum-goer, but this museum is definitely worth a visit.

4. Parque Rural de Anaga

Parque Rural de Anaga-la laguna

About a twenty-minute drive from the city is the Parque Rural de Anaga natural park. This beautiful nature reserve, with its mountainous landscape, historic villages, coves and hidden black sand beaches where you can take a swim, is not to be missed. Personally, I think the Jardina Viewpoint and Pico del Inglés Viewpoint are among the most beautiful in the park and definitely worth a hike.

5. Visit local markets

In La Laguna you will find several local markets where you can taste local products and buy fun souvenirs. Personally, I don’t often visit markets, but these markets are more than ordinary weekly markets where you can buy vegetables, fruits and clothes. Here you can see local artisans at work. The markets also give you a good idea of daily life in La Laguna. In addition, the markets are often pleasantly crowded, without being bothered by mass tourism.

Where is San Cristóbal de La Laguna located?

The city is located in the north of Tenerife, about ten kilometers from Santa Cruz and about eighty kilometers from Playa de las Américas .

How long does a visit to La Laguna take

If you only want to visit the town to walk through the historic center and then explore the Parque Rural de Anaga Nature Park, one day is sufficient. I do recommend leaving early in the morning if you are coming from the south of the island, for example from Playa de las Américas. Personally, I have done this several times with a rental car. Usually I then leave around 7:30 a.m. and am in town a little over an hour later, where I eat something and walk around.

By noon, I then often drive on to the Parque Rural de Anaga Natural Park, where I usually spend a few more hours walking around and visiting my favorite viewpoints Jardina Viewpoint and Pico de Ingles Viewpoint.

How to get to San Cristóbal de La Laguna in Tenerife?

Personally, I always rent a car from Rentalcars when I am in Tenerife, because public transport in Tenerife is less flexible and sometimes very slow. Besides, I like to be able to stop wherever I want on the way, to eat something somewhere or take a walk. In fact, Tenerife has many hidden gems that you cannot reach by public transport.

Is the city of San Cristóbal de La Laguna safe?

In general, you can walk around the city safely, but you should watch out for pickpockets and keep a close eye on your belongings. In addition, not all roads in Tenerife are well lit at night, so be careful when driving back to your hotel after dark.

Is La Laguna in Tenerife worth a visit?

I have visited the city several times and always find a walk through the historic center worthwhile. Especially if you have never been there before, it is not to be missed during a Tenerife vacation. I usually have breakfast somewhere or eat something at one of the local markets, and then drive on to Parque Rural de Anaga, where I spend the rest of the day strolling around and often taking a dip in the sea at one of the hidden beaches.

My 5 tips for visiting Los La Laguna in Tenerife

Finally, I have listed a few handy tips for you, if you would also like to visit the town of La Laguna in Tenerife.

1. Leave early in the morning for La Laguna.

If you want to see a lot of the city and also visit the museum, it is best to leave early in the morning, especially if you are traveling from the south of Tenerife. In addition, you will be less affected by heavy traffic on the road in the early morning.

2. Wear good shoes

Make sure you wear good shoes on which you can walk well and for a long time. Especially if you also want to visit the Parque Rural de Anaga, it is important to wear sturdy shoes, as there are many steep forest paths.

3. Taste local traditional dishes

In La Laguna there is less mass tourism than in the south of Tenerife. As a result, prices in restaurants and cafes are usually much lower, and you can enjoy local dishes such as papas arrugadas and fresh fish or other delicious products inexpensively.

4. Visit Parque Rural de Anaga

This is one of my favorite parks in Tenerife, especially the viewpoints Jardina Viewpoint and Pico de Ingles Viewpoint are not to be missed.

5. Rent a car in Tenerife

If you want to visit the most beautiful places and cities of Tenerife, a rental car is indispensable. This is because with a rental car you can get to places you cannot reach by public transport.
