At the same time, Rome is a lively city where you can also enjoy good food, a terrace and the typical Italian atmosphere.

Is Rome a nice city?
Rome is a large city that you can easily see as one big open-air museum. While walking through the centuries-old streets, you will encounter traces of history everywhere. You walk past ancient ruins, Baroque fountains, impressive statues and famous landmarks such as the Colosseum and the Roman Forum. It is precisely this combination that makes walking through Rome so special. You do not have to travel from one attraction to another to see something beautiful.
Rome also has plenty to offer when it comes to food. In the different neighborhoods, you will find cozy cafés, trattorias and restaurants where you can discover Italian and Roman cuisine. One example is tiramisu, which you can order in many places and sometimes find in surprising variations.
Rome is also an important destination for visitors who want to discover Vatican City. St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museums are among the city’s most famous places and attract many visitors every year.
In short, in my opinion, Rome is a great city for a city trip, especially if you are interested in history, culture, architecture and Italian cuisine. The city has many famous sights, but it is the atmosphere in the streets, the different neighborhoods and everyday Italian life that truly complete a visit to Rome.
Is Rome Worth Visiting? My Experience
Over the past ten years, I have visited Rome more than ten times, spread across different seasons. As a result, I have experienced the city at different times of the year. My first visit was in June 2015, one of the warmest months in Rome. I had bought tickets in advance for many of the sights, but I had not done so for Castel Sant’Angelo.
I decided to stand in line on the spot, hoping to get inside quickly. Looking back, this was not a good choice. Only a limited number of visitors are allowed inside at the same time, and visitors with a ticket bought in advance are given priority. In the end, I waited for about an hour and a half in the full sun. I had too little water with me and also ended up getting quite badly sunburned. It is an experience I would definitely handle differently during a future city trip to Rome.
In the years that followed, I returned to Rome several times, with my most recent visit in June 2025. During these visits, I still regularly walk past famous places such as St. Peter’s Square. By now, I mainly view many of the sights from the outside. I am also increasingly looking for other ways to discover Rome and its surroundings, for example on a bike tour or a day trip to a place outside the city.
I also love Italian cuisine and enjoy walking through Rome, looking for good places to eat or somewhere to have an espresso. Another thing I like about Rome is that the city continues to change. Construction and restoration work are carried out regularly, and new archaeological discoveries are sometimes uncovered during these works. Some places are temporarily closed as a result, but may become accessible again later.
Precisely because I have visited Rome several times now, I notice that the city continues to surprise me. For me, Rome is definitely worth visiting. Especially if you are interested in history, culture, architecture and Italian cuisine, you can easily return here several times.

In four days, you will have enough time to visit the main sights and still have time to take a relaxed walk through the different parts of the city. You do not have to plan every day completely, leaving you time to enjoy a good meal somewhere or sit down at a terrace for an espresso.
With four days, you also get a much better impression of Rome than if you only have one or two days. You will not only have time for the famous sights, but also to experience the atmosphere of the city. I personally consider this an important part of a city trip to Rome.

The Colosseum
The Colosseum is one of the most famous sights in Rome and a place you should not really miss during your first city trip to Rome. The almost 2,000-year-old amphitheater is an impressive remnant of the Roman Empire and is still a striking part of the cityscape.
The Colosseum was built to entertain the people of Rome with grand spectacles. The arena hosted gladiator fights and hunts involving wild animals, among other events. Public executions were also carried out there. Over the centuries, many people and animals died during these events.
Today, you can visit the Colosseum and explore various parts of the ancient amphitheater. The combination of the enormous size of the building and the history that took place here makes a visit special. It is a place where, while walking through Rome, you can literally come face to face with an important part of Roman history.
The Roman Forum is located between Capitoline Hill and the Colosseum. During the time of the Roman Empire, it was the center of public life in Rome. Religious ceremonies took place here, important political decisions were discussed, and residents gathered for various public events.
After the decline of the Roman Empire, the Roman Forum gradually fell into disrepair over the centuries, and parts of the area became covered. Archaeological excavations began in the 18th and 19th centuries. As a result, many of the remains you see here today were uncovered again.
Today, you can walk among the ruins of temples, basilicas and other buildings that are reminders of ancient Rome. The size of the area makes it easy to imagine how important this place once was.
Directly next to the Roman Forum is Palatine Hill, one of the seven hills of Rome. According to legend, Rome was founded by Romulus on this hill. In reality, Palatine Hill is mainly known as the place where wealthy Romans and later emperors had large residences and palaces built.
During a walk across Palatine Hill, you will pass the remains of imperial palaces, temples and gardens. From various points, you also have beautiful views over the Roman Forum. The Roman Forum and Palatine Hill can therefore easily be combined during a visit to Rome.
The Trevi Fountain, known in Italian as Fontana di Trevi, is one of the most famous sights in Rome. The fountain is located in the heart of the historic center and is hard to miss when walking through the city. Many visitors come here to admire the impressive Baroque fountain, take photos and, of course, throw a coin into the water.
The Trevi Fountain is particularly impressive because of its large Baroque design and the way the fountain forms part of the Palazzo Poli. In the center stands the sea god Oceanus on a shell-shaped chariot, pulled by two seahorses and accompanied by tritons. The horses represent the calm and the rough sea. This gives the whole scene a lively character.
The tradition of throwing a coin also belongs to a visit to the Trevi Fountain. According to the famous legend, you will return to Rome one day if you throw a coin over your left shoulder into the fountain. It has now become a regular part of a visit and gives many tourists a fun photo opportunity.
You can simply view the Trevi Fountain from the square, and you do not need to pay an entrance fee for this. Since February 2, 2026, tourists and non-residents have been charged a €2 entrance fee if they want to enter the restricted area directly next to the water. This does not apply to access to the square or to viewing the fountain itself.
St. Peter’s Basilica is located on the impressive St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City and is one of the most famous churches in the world. Construction of the current basilica began in 1506 and took more than a hundred years. Several famous artists and architects worked on the building, including Michelangelo, who played an important role in the design of the enormous dome.
The basilica is also impressive on the inside. As soon as you walk in, the enormous space immediately stands out. The interior is richly decorated with marble, statues and works of art. The large dome is one of the most striking features of the basilica and largely determines the appearance of the interior.
St. Peter’s Basilica also has an important religious significance. According to Catholic tradition, the tomb of the apostle Peter, who is considered the first pope, lies beneath the basilica. As a result, the basilica has been an important destination for pilgrims from all over the world for centuries.
But even if you are not religious, a visit to St. Peter’s Basilica is well worth it. The combination of its enormous size, architecture and works of art makes it one of the places I would definitely visit during a city trip to Rome.
The Vatican Museums are among the most famous museums in Rome and are located in Vatican City. The museum complex consists of various museums, galleries and chapels that have been collected and expanded by different popes over the centuries.
During a visit, you walk past a huge collection of art and historical objects from different periods. These include sculptures, paintings and antiquities from Greek, Roman and Egyptian history. The Renaissance is also strongly represented here.
The most famous part of the Vatican Museums is the Sistine Chapel. The chapel is particularly famous for the ceiling that Michelangelo painted in the 16th century. The paintings make a visit special, but the route through the museums themselves is also impressive because of the amount of art, historic rooms and richly decorated halls.
The Vatican Museums are therefore highly recommended if you are interested in art, history and culture during your city trip to Rome. Make sure to allow enough time, as the museum complex is large and there is a lot to see.
The Pantheon is one of the best-preserved monuments from ancient Rome and is one of the most impressive buildings you can visit during a city trip to Rome. The original building was constructed around 27 BC on the orders of Marcus Agrippa, an important general and confidant of Emperor Augustus. The Pantheon you see today was largely rebuilt later under Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD, after earlier buildings on this site were destroyed by fire.
The most striking feature of the Pantheon is its enormous dome. In the center is the oculus, a circular opening about 9 meters wide through which daylight enters the building. The light moves across the walls and floor throughout the day, giving the interior a different appearance at different times. The oculus probably also had a symbolic meaning and may have represented a connection between the temple and the heavens.
What makes the Pantheon so special to me is that you can still get a good impression of the impressive architectural skills of the Romans here. The enormous dome, the vast interior and the age of the building are truly impressive. You are literally standing inside a building that was constructed almost two thousand years ago and is still largely standing today.
When you visit Rome, you will quickly notice that the different neighborhoods each have their own atmosphere. That is why I enjoy not only visiting the famous sights, but also walking through different parts of the city during a visit.
Trastevere is one of my favorite neighborhoods. The neighborhood is located on the other side of the Tiber River and is known for its narrow, cobbled streets, old façades and charming squares. During the day, you can take a relaxed walk through the area, while in the evening the neighborhood comes more to life. You will find plenty of trattorias, restaurants and bars here.
I also regularly walk through Monti when I am in Rome. The neighborhood is located close to the Colosseum and has a lively atmosphere. While Monti was once mainly a working-class neighborhood, today you will find small shops, boutiques and cozy places to have a drink. Piazza della Madonna dei Monti is a popular meeting place in the neighborhood.
For me, Centro Storico is the heart of Rome. Many famous sights are located close to each other in this historic center. During a walk, you can visit places such as the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon and Piazza Navona. It can be busy here, but I think the combination of historic buildings, squares and narrow streets makes this a neighborhood you should definitely discover during your first city trip to Rome.
For food lovers, Testaccio is an interesting neighborhood. Testaccio is known for its Roman food culture and the Mercato di Testaccio. You will also find restaurants here serving traditional Roman dishes. If you want to look beyond the most famous tourist attractions during your city trip to Rome, Testaccio is definitely worth a visit.
What Is the Best Way to Travel to Rome?
How you travel to Rome best mainly depends on where you are coming from and how much time you have for the journey. From many European cities, you can easily fly to Rome, but traveling by train or car are also options. If you are coming from outside Europe, flying is usually the most obvious choice.
By Plane
Rome has two major airports: Rome Fiumicino (FCO) and Rome Ciampino (CIA). Fiumicino is Rome’s main airport and handles most international flights. Ciampino is smaller and is used by several low-cost airlines.
There are direct flights to Rome from many European cities. There are also direct connections to Rome Fiumicino from cities outside Europe. For a short city trip, flying is usually the fastest and easiest way to travel to Rome.
By Train
You can also travel to Rome by train from several European countries. High-speed trains operated by Trenitalia and Italo connect Rome with various major Italian cities. There are also international train connections to Italy from countries such as France, Switzerland and Austria.
If you are traveling from another part of Europe, the train journey will obviously take longer and usually involves one or more changes. Nevertheless, the train can be a comfortable option, especially if you prefer not to fly or want to combine your trip with a visit to other cities.
By Car
Rome is also accessible by car, which can be interesting if you are taking a road trip through Italy. You then have the freedom to visit other places and sights along the way.
Keep in mind that you have to pay tolls on many Italian motorways. Traffic in Rome can also be busy, and parking in the city center can be difficult. In addition, many streets in the historic center are part of a ZTL, a zone where car traffic is restricted. As a tourist, you cannot simply drive into these areas.
From Outside Europe to Rome
If you are traveling to Rome from the United States, Canada, Asia or another destination outside Europe, flying is usually the best option. Rome Fiumicino is the city’s main international airport and has direct connections to several major cities around the world.
From Fiumicino Airport to the City Center
If you arrive at Rome Fiumicino, you can easily travel from the airport to the city center. The Leonardo Express runs directly to Roma Termini, Rome’s main train station. From there, you can continue to your accommodation or another destination in the city.
Many of Rome’s famous sights in the city center are within walking distance of each other. Walking is therefore often the most pleasant way to explore the city. Along the way, you will naturally pass squares, fountains, shops and other places that you might otherwise miss.
If you want to cover longer distances or travel to another part of the city, the metro is a convenient option. Especially if you want to visit Vatican City, for example, the metro can save you a lot of time. For a city trip to Rome, I would therefore mainly combine walking with the metro.
Yes, Rome is generally a safe city to visit as a tourist. As in many large European cities, the risk of serious crime for visitors is relatively low. However, it is wise to pay extra attention to your belongings in busy places.
Pickpockets and other forms of petty theft can occur, especially in places where many tourists gather. Think of busy squares, public transport and queues at popular attractions. Keeping your bag securely closed and storing valuables somewhere that is not easily accessible are simple precautions.
Above all, do not let this discourage you from exploring Rome. With normal precautions, you can easily visit the city on foot, use public transport and go out in the evening.
My Tips for a City Trip to Rome
With four days, you have enough time to visit several famous places while also discovering the city itself. You do not have to completely fill your days, leaving you time for a walk, a drink on a terrace or a good restaurant.
Walk as much as possible
You do not discover Rome only inside museums and monuments. It is precisely when walking that you come across beautiful squares, historic buildings and small streets. Many places in the historic center are also relatively close to each other.
Look beyond the most famous sights
A visit to the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain and Vatican City is part of a first visit to Rome for many people. But also take the time to explore neighborhoods such as Trastevere, Monti or Testaccio. There, you will experience a different side of the city.
Take your time to enjoy Italian cuisine
For me, food is an important part of visiting Rome. Do not only look for restaurants near the most famous tourist attractions, but also walk down a different street. Take your time for lunch, dinner or simply an espresso somewhere and enjoy the atmosphere.
Keep the weather in mind
Rome can get very hot in summer. Especially when you are spending a lot of time outdoors and want to visit several sights in one day, it is important to bring enough water. On hot days, it is better not to plan too many activities one after another.
Do not plan every minute of your day
For me, a city trip to Rome is not just about ticking off sights. When you leave some room in your schedule, you can stay somewhere a little longer, turn into an unfamiliar street or spontaneously discover a nice terrace.
My most important tip is therefore simple: take the time to really experience Rome. The city has enough famous sights to fill your days, but it is the walks, squares, neighborhoods, restaurants and small moments in between that make me want to return to Rome again and again.

St. Peter’s Basilica is located on the impressive St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City and is one of the most famous churches in the world. Construction of the current basilica began in 1506 and took more than a hundred years. Several famous artists and architects worked on the building, including Michelangelo, who played an important role in the design of the enormous dome.
The basilica is also impressive on the inside. As soon as you walk in, the enormous space immediately stands out. The interior is richly decorated with marble, statues and works of art. The large dome is one of the most striking features of the basilica and largely determines the appearance of the interior.
St. Peter’s Basilica also has an important religious significance. According to Catholic tradition, the tomb of the apostle Peter, who is considered the first pope, lies beneath the basilica. As a result, the basilica has been an important destination for pilgrims from all over the world for centuries.
But even if you are not religious, a visit to St. Peter’s Basilica is well worth it. The combination of its enormous size, architecture and works of art makes it one of the places I would definitely visit during a city trip to Rome.
Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel
The Vatican Museums are among the most famous museums in Rome and are located in Vatican City. The museum complex consists of various museums, galleries and chapels that have been collected and expanded by different popes over the centuries.
During a visit, you walk past a huge collection of art and historical objects from different periods. These include sculptures, paintings and antiquities from Greek, Roman and Egyptian history. The Renaissance is also strongly represented here.
The most famous part of the Vatican Museums is the Sistine Chapel. The chapel is particularly famous for the ceiling that Michelangelo painted in the 16th century. The paintings make a visit special, but the route through the museums themselves is also impressive because of the amount of art, historic rooms and richly decorated halls.
The Vatican Museums are therefore highly recommended if you are interested in art, history and culture during your city trip to Rome. Make sure to allow enough time, as the museum complex is large and there is a lot to see.
Pantheon in Rome
The Pantheon is one of the best-preserved monuments from ancient Rome and is one of the most impressive buildings you can visit during a city trip to Rome. The original building was constructed around 27 BC on the orders of Marcus Agrippa, an important general and confidant of Emperor Augustus. The Pantheon you see today was largely rebuilt later under Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD, after earlier buildings on this site were destroyed by fire.
The most striking feature of the Pantheon is its enormous dome. In the center is the oculus, a circular opening about 9 meters wide through which daylight enters the building. The light moves across the walls and floor throughout the day, giving the interior a different appearance at different times. The oculus probably also had a symbolic meaning and may have represented a connection between the temple and the heavens.
What makes the Pantheon so special to me is that you can still get a good impression of the impressive architectural skills of the Romans here. The enormous dome, the vast interior and the age of the building are truly impressive. You are literally standing inside a building that was constructed almost two thousand years ago and is still largely standing today.
Which Neighborhoods Should You Visit in Rome?
When you visit Rome, you will quickly notice that the different neighborhoods each have their own atmosphere. That is why I enjoy not only visiting the famous sights, but also walking through different parts of the city during a visit.
Trastevere is one of my favorite neighborhoods. The neighborhood is located on the other side of the Tiber River and is known for its narrow, cobbled streets, old façades and charming squares. During the day, you can take a relaxed walk through the area, while in the evening the neighborhood comes more to life. You will find plenty of trattorias, restaurants and bars here.
I also regularly walk through Monti when I am in Rome. The neighborhood is located close to the Colosseum and has a lively atmosphere. While Monti was once mainly a working-class neighborhood, today you will find small shops, boutiques and cozy places to have a drink. Piazza della Madonna dei Monti is a popular meeting place in the neighborhood.
For me, Centro Storico is the heart of Rome. Many famous sights are located close to each other in this historic center. During a walk, you can visit places such as the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon and Piazza Navona. It can be busy here, but I think the combination of historic buildings, squares and narrow streets makes this a neighborhood you should definitely discover during your first city trip to Rome.
For food lovers, Testaccio is an interesting neighborhood. Testaccio is known for its Roman food culture and the Mercato di Testaccio. You will also find restaurants here serving traditional Roman dishes. If you want to look beyond the most famous tourist attractions during your city trip to Rome, Testaccio is definitely worth a visit.
What Is the Best Way to Travel to Rome?
How you travel to Rome best mainly depends on where you are coming from and how much time you have for the journey. From many European cities, you can easily fly to Rome, but traveling by train or car are also options. If you are coming from outside Europe, flying is usually the most obvious choice.
By Plane
Rome has two major airports: Rome Fiumicino (FCO) and Rome Ciampino (CIA). Fiumicino is Rome’s main airport and handles most international flights. Ciampino is smaller and is used by several low-cost airlines.
There are direct flights to Rome from many European cities. There are also direct connections to Rome Fiumicino from cities outside Europe. For a short city trip, flying is usually the fastest and easiest way to travel to Rome.
By Train
You can also travel to Rome by train from several European countries. High-speed trains operated by Trenitalia and Italo connect Rome with various major Italian cities. There are also international train connections to Italy from countries such as France, Switzerland and Austria.
If you are traveling from another part of Europe, the train journey will obviously take longer and usually involves one or more changes. Nevertheless, the train can be a comfortable option, especially if you prefer not to fly or want to combine your trip with a visit to other cities.
By Car
Rome is also accessible by car, which can be interesting if you are taking a road trip through Italy. You then have the freedom to visit other places and sights along the way.
Keep in mind that you have to pay tolls on many Italian motorways. Traffic in Rome can also be busy, and parking in the city center can be difficult. In addition, many streets in the historic center are part of a ZTL, a zone where car traffic is restricted. As a tourist, you cannot simply drive into these areas.
From Outside Europe to Rome
If you are traveling to Rome from the United States, Canada, Asia or another destination outside Europe, flying is usually the best option. Rome Fiumicino is the city’s main international airport and has direct connections to several major cities around the world.
From Fiumicino Airport to the City Center
If you arrive at Rome Fiumicino, you can easily travel from the airport to the city center. The Leonardo Express runs directly to Roma Termini, Rome’s main train station. From there, you can continue to your accommodation or another destination in the city.
What is the best way to travel in Rome?
Many of Rome’s famous sights in the city center are within walking distance of each other. Walking is therefore often the most pleasant way to explore the city. Along the way, you will naturally pass squares, fountains, shops and other places that you might otherwise miss.
If you want to cover longer distances or travel to another part of the city, the metro is a convenient option. Especially if you want to visit Vatican City, for example, the metro can save you a lot of time. For a city trip to Rome, I would therefore mainly combine walking with the metro.
Is Rome Safe for Tourists?
Yes, Rome is generally a safe city to visit as a tourist. As in many large European cities, the risk of serious crime for visitors is relatively low. However, it is wise to pay extra attention to your belongings in busy places.
Pickpockets and other forms of petty theft can occur, especially in places where many tourists gather. Think of busy squares, public transport and queues at popular attractions. Keeping your bag securely closed and storing valuables somewhere that is not easily accessible are simple precautions.
Above all, do not let this discourage you from exploring Rome. With normal precautions, you can easily visit the city on foot, use public transport and go out in the evening.
My Tips for a City Trip to Rome
With four days, you have enough time to visit several famous places while also discovering the city itself. You do not have to completely fill your days, leaving you time for a walk, a drink on a terrace or a good restaurant.
Walk as much as possible
You do not discover Rome only inside museums and monuments. It is precisely when walking that you come across beautiful squares, historic buildings and small streets. Many places in the historic center are also relatively close to each other.
Look beyond the most famous sights
A visit to the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain and Vatican City is part of a first visit to Rome for many people. But also take the time to explore neighborhoods such as Trastevere, Monti or Testaccio. There, you will experience a different side of the city.
Take your time to enjoy Italian cuisine
For me, food is an important part of visiting Rome. Do not only look for restaurants near the most famous tourist attractions, but also walk down a different street. Take your time for lunch, dinner or simply an espresso somewhere and enjoy the atmosphere.
Keep the weather in mind
Rome can get very hot in summer. Especially when you are spending a lot of time outdoors and want to visit several sights in one day, it is important to bring enough water. On hot days, it is better not to plan too many activities one after another.
Do not plan every minute of your day
For me, a city trip to Rome is not just about ticking off sights. When you leave some room in your schedule, you can stay somewhere a little longer, turn into an unfamiliar street or spontaneously discover a nice terrace.
My most important tip is therefore simple: take the time to really experience Rome. The city has enough famous sights to fill your days, but it is the walks, squares, neighborhoods, restaurants and small moments in between that make me want to return to Rome again and again.

How many days do you need for a city trip to Rome?
For a first city trip to Rome, I recommend spending at least four days there. This gives you enough time to visit the main sights while also taking relaxed walks through the city. If you prefer to take things more slowly or want to see more of Rome and the surrounding area, a longer stay is a good option.
Is Rome expensive for a city trip?
Rome is not the cheapest destination for a city trip. Hotels and popular attractions in particular can take up a significant part of your budget. By traveling outside the high season, booking your accommodation in advance and checking the costs of tickets and activities beforehand, you can plan your trip more effectively.
Can you explore Rome on foot?
Yes, especially the historic center can easily be explored on foot. Many famous places are relatively close to each other. Keep in mind, however, that there are cobblestones, uneven streets and distances that sometimes appear shorter on the map than they actually are.
Do you need tickets in advance for attractions in Rome?
For popular attractions such as the Colosseum and the Vatican Museums, it is advisable to check in advance whether reservations are required. Especially during busy periods, tickets and time slots can fill up quickly. My own experience at Castel Sant’Angelo taught me that planning ahead can save you a lot of waiting time.

Rome is particularly busy during the summer months, school holidays and around major holidays. Popular attractions can also be very busy on weekends. During a Jubilee Year, Rome can also receive significantly more visitors.

Yes. Rome is an interesting destination for a first city trip, especially if you are interested in history, culture, architecture and Italian cuisine. Keep in mind, however, that the city can be large and busy and that you will do a lot of walking.
