But is a visit to the Colosseum really as impressive as everyone says? In this blog, I explain whether a visit to the Colosseum is worth it and what you can see there. What is the Colosseum in Rome?
The Colosseum in Rome is a former amphitheatre from Roman times. It was built to entertain the inhabitants of Rome with gladiator fights, hunts of wild animals, and other spectacles. Public executions also took place here. It is believed that over the centuries, hundreds of thousands of people and millions of animals lost their lives in this arena.

In 2026, follow-up works are taking place on parts around this passage and on the maintenance of walls and walkways. The Colosseum remains open during these works, although some areas may be temporarily closed off.
And the arena floor? The original wooden arena floor was removed in the 19th century and has not been reinstated as a permanent floor in 2025–2026. There are plans for a (partial) reconstruction in the future, but these have not yet been completed or made permanently accessible. Over the past ten years, I’ve been to Rome more than ten times and have also visited the Colosseum several times during that period. On my first visit, I wanted to visit the Colosseum spontaneously, but because of the long queues at the ticket offices, I wasn’t able to buy a ticket in time. As a result, I couldn’t see the inside of the Colosseum back then.
On later visits, I always bought my tickets in advance. I usually choose an audio ticket so I can walk around at my own pace, but I’ve also booked guided tours a few times. Personally, I think a tour is really worth it if you want to learn more about the history of the building, the gladiator fights, and the architecture. If you mainly come to admire the monument and take some nice photos, an audio ticket is often more than sufficient.
I’ve visited the Colosseum at different times of day and can recommend going as early as possible, right after opening. Then you have time to explore the building calmly and take photos or videos. If you go later in the day, it’s often so crowded that you move almost step by step through the Colosseum and hardly have the space to really look at anything properly or take photos.
In addition, I often combine a visit to the Colosseum with the Forum Romanum. During my last visit, in June 2025, I had ordered my tickets in advance and went to the Colosseum first. Even though I also had a ticket for the Forum Romanum, I still had to wait in a long line there. In summer, it can also get very hot at the Forum Romanum, so it’s wise to bring enough water.
A useful tip: in the square between the Colosseum and the Forum Romanum, there are water fountains where you can refill your water bottle for free with still or sparkling water. You can also find drinking fountains within the Forum Romanum itself. It’s also good to apply sunscreen and wear a cap or hat, as there is little shade. I’ve personally gotten quite badly sunburned here before.
Whether a visit to the Colosseum is worth it for you depends on your interests and what you want to see. Personally, I find it absolutely worth it: it gives an impressive picture of Roman history, and you really feel something of the atmosphere of the past here. But if you don’t like large crowds or aren’t very interested in history, it may be that visiting the inside suits you less. In that case, it’s already special to admire the Colosseum from the outside.

Right opposite the Colosseum lies the Forum Romanum. This was once the political and social heart of ancient Rome. During a walk through the Forum, you pass the remains of ancient temples, basilicas, and other important buildings.
If you’re already here, it’s definitely worth climbing the Palatine Hill as well. From the top, you have a beautiful view over the Forum Romanum and the surrounding area. It’s also a nice place to look around calmly and take photos.
Within walking distance is also Circus Maximus, the largest and oldest chariot racing stadium in Rome. In the past, spectacular chariot races were held here. Today, it is an open space where you mainly get a good sense of how large this area once was.
